How many of you guys brush, use those wipey pads, or buy special treats (such as greenies) for your dogs teeth? Mine get their teeth scrubbed once a week.... as well as their eyes wiped (nibbler has watery eyes, so we end up having to do his more often) and their ears wiped out.

I try to brush Jacks when we can. He has ulcers in his mouth though so I think it hurts the poor boy and he bleeds a little to. His breath smells so bad though because of the ulcers I try to brush to help him. Jeter's like once a week, they both HATE it!!

Are the ulcers part of whatever bothers his nails? or do you have no clue.

It may all be systemic Lupus. We aren't sure, it does make sense though with eveything he has. His biopsy has been rescheduled for March 4th so hopefully we will have some answers then.

I started sticking my fingers in Nibs mouth when he was a puppy. Now he'll bite down but not hurt you. Fry doesn't like it but he puts up with it.

We brush once a week. I have the fingertip toothbrush so that works well. The only problem I have is the liver flavored toothpaste, they each try to lick it so much their little tongues go crazy and I have a hard time getting to all the teeth!! Fred is really good, he just sits there, Alice you have to straightjacket and hope for the best.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Ok, Jen, this is a 5 year old who once stuck a pickle so far up her nose the doctor had to remove it with little forceps.... and her reasoning? "It smelled good and i wanted to keep smelling it."

I do brushing once a week, and use the finger brush. i watch my dogs and they are all big bone chewers, camper (who is only 6 months younger than minnie) has beautiful teeth, min had hers cleaned less than a year ago and they are already bad. But min doesn't chew bones.

And as we lie beneath the stars
We realize how small we are
If they could love like you and me
Imagine what the world could be~Nickleback
For my dogs teach me everyday, and in their eyes I see the person I strive to be-Karen, about Camper

Well, let's see.  I brush them once a week and also give them Nutrident chewies  (like greenies but different formula), use dental wipes sometimes, give them bully sticks once a week and provide the minty Nylabones for them.  Mayfly is a chewer so her teeth aren't bad.  Skipper and Mitzy and Loco don't chew on the minty Nylabones.  Mitzy will need her teeth cleaned probably next month.  Skipper had his done last summer.

Little Mitzy is my problem dental child....tiny mouth and not much saliva AND crooked teeth.

I give mine the minty Dingos too, they really like them. I also give them one mini dingo a night while we eat dinner (this is how we have delt with the begging) and they always have chew stuff out. Our vet said their teeth looked really good, both of them, and their gums were healthy. When I went to VetSmart to have them microchipped the lady there tried telling me they had bad teeth and I should have them clean them.  I told her show me any tarter on my dogs teeth and she avoided that so I told her to call my vet and see if she agrees and she didn't say much so I told her they shouldn't tell people their dogs have bad teeth to make more money for PetSmart, it's not right. She didn't push the issue after that, I don't think she expected me to know so much!!

Mary, how old is Trixi? I think it's usually when they are 3 years old most vets recommend cleaning.
And remember Mitzy has a tiny mouth and her snout is not as long as most ratties (one of the reasons we suspect she's part chi)....your pups probably don't have this problem.

Thanks for that. Mine has looked at our dog's teeth, but never said they needed to be cleaned.

PetSmart always tries to upsell their services. I was standing in there with my dogs looking at the toys and nibbler was sniffing around and fry was sitting there. A guy came up to me and i called nibbler to me where he sat down and the man started asking me about how their training was and telling me about the services they offer. When I said I prefer to train my dogs myself he said well are you a certified dog trainer? And I said no, can't you tell since my dogs are running amuck barking and peeing everywhere since they're both unneutered?

Then some other dog knocked over a display lol.

I think the Raw Meaty Bones Raw diet my girls started in November is gonna keep their teeth free of tartar from now on.  Button doesn't have bad breath anymore either.  Button just had hers cleaned but I think that will be the last time we'll have to do it.  Don't think Zipper's gonna ever have to have hers done.  The oral improvements they claim on raw diet really are true!

I brush their teeth once a week. Plus a couple chews during the week... I've never had a problem with any of my dog's teeth. Sam's 12 now and the vet has always said she's got great teeth. I've never had them cleaned and, to this day, the vet still is happy with her teeth. (She goes to Banfield at Petsmart, but I've never had a problem with ours...)

I try to brush Phoenix's teeth once a week, he doesn't really like it. i use the finger tooth brush, but I am going to get some gauze pads which aren't as big, maybe that way I can get him to not mind it??
I read that giving them carrots helps clean their teeth too? Anybody else hear of this? I gave him one, and he gobbled it right up!
