I got my dogs a meaty bone (in the dog section of our local country store) that is made for dogs.  It had like a covering of meaty stuff on a good sized bone.  Well, anyway my dogs like to chew on it, but it is so hard that they can't chew it up like a rawhide or bully stick.  I'm worried that they are going to break teeth on it.  It sounds horrible when they chew it.  I thought it would be ok because its for dogs, but I dont know.  It's not like a reg steak bone that dogs chew up it seems harder to me.  I took it away and they were bummed, but I don't want any broken teeth.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about and if you have gotten your dogs this and if it is ok?

In my opinion, dogs should only be given raw bones.  As far as I know, those are only available in the meat department at a grocery store.  Large, weight bearing bones, or marrow bones, are very hard and can break teeth, or at least wear their teeth down too much.  Those are the hollow, tubular, thigh bones. Normally I buy  soup bones, sometimes referred to as knuckle bones.  I bought beef back ribs the last time and they were a huge hit also.

Ditto on what Ski said. Feed them only raw to avoid splinters and avoid the weight-bearing bones as they are just too hard, particularly for really small dogs like ours. I have a friend that has a rattie with a broken tooth, a canine, and the dog is gonna lose it according to the dental specialist she's staking him to next week.
