Ok, after a week with us Skipper has softer fur, no dandruff, is gaining weight and now his breath smells like dog breath instead of a sewer! I don't know what he was eating before but it had to have been bad. All I've done for him is a bath and some good food....Nutro Lamb & Rice with supplements of oatmeal, fresh veggies, eggs and salmon.
Here's my question: His eye socket looks dirty....he can't clean it....can I clean it without hurting him? I mean I'm scared to put any pressure in there....is it just bone behind it? Please help - anyone with medical or anatomy or practical experience with this!
thanks guys! |

| Sorry, MB, I'm no help on this one. I'm glad Skipper is improving. I would call the vet tomorrow and talk to him about it. |

| Thanks Tracey, I'm going to take him in just for a check up probably at the end of April and will ask a lot of questions then. Just thought with all the nurses and people that have/do work for vets someone might know. |

| Maybe irrigate it with some saline solution. Very gently, without much pressure. |

| Oh MB, I wish I could help but the very best thing would be to call the vet. Were you planning on having it sewn up like Mitzy's? |

Donna has the right idea, MB. If Skipper isnt overly sensitive about you messing with his eye, you could irrigate it with a saline solution (you can buy this at any drugstore) and just pat it gently with a gauze pad. When his eye was removed, most likely all occular nerves and tissue were removed also. |

Ok, thanks Donna, I'll do that.
Jolene, I'll ask the vet what the options are. It doesn't bother him at all so I may just leave it the way he is. It's possible that there was too much damage to the surrounding skin and tissue for the vet to sew the lids shut.....he has terrible scars. With Mitzy is was only the eyeball itself that was damaged. |

| Poor little sweetie! I'm so glad he is doing so well with you Mary Beth! I think saline will probably work to clean out the eye area. |

Oh ok. That makes sense. Keep us posted either way. |

Glad to hear he's doing better MB!!! Not sure what to do about the eye, saline sounds good. Sorry, but that's one area that kinda gives me chills, just the thought of cleaning it . Good Luck, Skipper found a great home! |

But aren't you in the medical field??? At least that makes me feel better about being kinda creeped out about touching it. I'll try the saline or just wait for the vet! |

| Well, the sad thing is that eyes creep me out, too and I've got 2 dogs with missing eyes! Seriously, I saw a kid in my first grade class get poked by a coat hanger in the coat closet - he turned around and blood was everywhere, looked like he lost his eye - have had a fear of eyes being poked out ever since then! |

As many times as our mothers cautioned us about things with the threat "you'll poke your eye out!" it's no wonder we are skittish about it. |

| Mary Beth, in the contact lens asile of the drug store you can get some saline solution. Just plain basic stuff. Not any of the stuff to wash lenses with. What we use in eye surgery is called BSS (balanced saline solution). It is made for the eyes. Granted Skipper doesn't have an eye, but use the stuff found in the eye care aisle. |

Um Yeah, I'd have a fear too ! And it's not looking at the eye, just the thought of cleaning it. What about just mixing 1/3 salt with 2/3 warm water? Have you spoke with the vet yet? Keep us posted on what you do , very curious!

| I'm taking him to the vet at the end of the month (pay day). I'd take him earlier if it was urgent but it's not. I did manage to lightly touch inside the eye socket last night....it just seems like it would hurt him or something. |
