I'm just looking for some second (and third and fourth) opinions.  About a month ago, I changed up Rowdy's dog food.  He was getting Canidae with Orijen mixed in and I switched out the Orijen and replaced it with EVO small bites.  However, I've noticed that he seems to be thinning fur on his face, closest to his eyes and then up,toward his ears.  He also has a tiny dry skin spot on the edge of one of his ears.

My first guess is that maybe he's allergic to the EVO.  Has anyone else had any problems like that?  With EVO or anything else?  My second thought was mange, and that's just because I know it's a skin problem.  But, the pictures I've seen of it online look red and irritated, and his skin is not red and irritated.  It's just that his fur seems to be thinning out more than I remember it being...  We're not even to bare skin, so there's always the option that I could just be totally crazy too....  I still have  bunch of the Canidae/EVO mix, but Sam's still eating that, so it's not like I would be trashing it.  I'm thinking about picking up a small bag of Orijen and just giving him that until the other is used up by Sam.  Then putting them both back onto the same Canidae/mix feed.  James doesn't really want me to do this since it would be three different foods for three different dogs, but he will if I insist.  (James is usually home from work before me and feeds the dogs before I get home, so he would be the one who has to deal with it.)

Anyone have any advice?  Oh, and thanks in advance...

well i am used to feeding multiple dogs different food.....but am could it just be dry skin....murry and my son are both having huge issues with this....is he scratching...also mange can come in different forms and with some dogs they are born with it and always carry it but on rare and sometimes never does it show its pretty little face...it couldnt hurt to ask your vet for his thoughts...give him a call and ask about it.......milly

Oscar has always had thin fur in that area and occasionally the tip of an ear will get a dry, rough-type of feel to it.  When that happened I gave him a half of a fish oil cap, along with his normal dose of Seapet fish oil with E.  I didn't even consider allergies,  I just figure he reacts a little differently to various foods or perhaps the humidity is very low in the house with the furnace running.  He's eating EVO reduced fat now, before that it was Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken.

Taken from: http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#TopDry

Evo is a high-protein, low-carb, grain-free diet. The ingredients look very good, but I have heard reports of some dogs having problems on this diet, especially when used long term (problems include excessive water drinking in a number of dogs, probably due to the high protein content, and dry coat in a few, possibly due to the high calcium in the regular variety). I think it is better used as part of the diet, or as part of a rotation of foods, rather than fed all the time. Regular and Reduced Fat EVO varieties should not be fed to large-breed puppies under 6 months old due to the high calcium content. The Red Meat variety is lower in calcium and so it is safer, though the amount of calcium is still higher than is recommended for large-breed puppies. Mixing EVO half and half with a variety of animal protein sources (boneless meat, eggs, dairy, etc.) will reduce the overall calcium percentage in the diet to a more acceptable level.

Maybe this could be causing his redness and thinning fur!

Thanks Ski and Erika!  I will give the fish oil a try.  We have capsules here- Sam used to get them regularly.  I'm mixing the EVO as part of a revolvong diet, exactly like what they are talking about in the dogaware article.  The woman who owns my pet store went to school for pet nutrition and it's exactly what she recommended.  After the EVO mix is up, I actually plan to rotate to Solid Gold BATH with the Canidae.

But if the fish oil doesn't help anything, I'll take him off it.  Perhaps he's just a bit too sensitive for it....

I tried Copper on Evo a while back and she got the RUNS on it. No other dog food has ever given her the runs before. It's just a bit too rich for her, I guess. I know other people here have their dogs on it and LOVE it. There's no denying that it's a high quality food. I'd be interested to hear if Rowdy's issues clear up after the evo was stopped!

My girls are great on it, but Rosie's mom had to be taken off it...I don't know the details, but she's much better now that she's back on the regular Innova. I know she has thyroid problems, but I don't know if that was a factor.

I don't know how EVO and Wellness Core compare, but I had those same types of problems when I tried to feed Core. Not sure if it is the high protein or balance of nutrients some dogs don't tolerate or what. I would try another food and see if it doesn't go away. Ears can definately get that crustiness with a food intolerence. After my incidence with the boys and Core I am sticking with NB Duck and Potato.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Yeah, I was looking at Solid Gold in Petco Sunday but I got the Natural Balance Duck/Potato. All 4 dogs do well on it so I'm sticking to it. Of course Mayfly is my problem child with allergies.

Thanks guys! I tried some fish oil for him, but he started having diarhea every day in his crate while I was at work, so I stopped the oil and the EVO. I'm still feeding Sam the EVO/Canidae mix (I mixed it all up already), but Rowdy's on just Orijen now. And seems to be doing better- ears seem to be looking better and diarhea went away right away. Like Sarah, I think it must just be the balance or processing or something...

Just an FYI, fish oil can cause diarrhea. The best plan is to slowly increase the amount over a week or so so they adjust to it. And if you give to much for their weight it can cause diarrhea too.

Thanks. I guess my other two are big enough that I've never had any issues with it. I was giving Rowdy a little less than the recommended amount, but it just wasn't working... The problem was that he would have diarhea in his crate and James would come home to it. I've just given up on the fish oil with him and his skin problems seem to be clearing all up with the Orijen.
If it does come up again, I'll be a LOT slower with the fish oil intro- thanks for letting me know, Sarah.
