Most of you know that my Jack Russell Terrier Lucy is blind. She went blind literally overnight (with no warning at all) from SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome) in 2004 when she was only 2 1/2 years old.  SARDS still has no "official" known cause, even though it has been around for 25 years, and strikes 2,000 - 4,000 dogs each year. SARDS is not breed specific, but is most common in middle age dogs, and more often strikes females.

Even though this news is much too late to help our Lucy... I'm so excited that there is finally hope for a "treatment" option that was found at Iowa State University. It worked for a dog with an early diagnosis of SARDS... even though they still don't actually know the cause of SARDS.

The complete story w/several videos is here if anyone is interested in learning more: http://tinyurl.com/2srfwk

Fascinating article and a wonderful advancement for science. I hope that becomes common place over the years to use that kind of treatment, only then will it become affordable. Thanks for sharing Karen. Must have been horrifying to go through that with your Lucy!

If you want the best seat in the house ... move the dog!
