Now I know why Shadow has been chewing at everything...he usually doesn't do this and he has his toys to play with.. but lately he has an irresistable urge to chew on stuff.  I looked in his mouth last night and on one of his teeth... (the very long one on the side), has the baby tooth right next to it and the gums are red.  I feel so bad for him.  I'm going to call the vet today and make an appointment for this baby tooth to be removed.  I feel so bad for him as I now know it is irritating him.  Any suggestions before of what to do before his appointment?

Hon can you try to get him to chew on some ice pieces? The cold will help the pain and swelling and probably the redness too. Cameo is teething and she likes to chew ice sometimes. It seems to help. I hope he feels better soon. Let us know what the vet says.

Hi Barb! I've never gone through this with an animal, but Johnny (my 12 yr old skin kid) was unfortunate enough to have several teeth that came in like that and he voiced his complaints loudly! There was one that came up directly under the other one, looked to be stuck one right atop the other and was large, in the front bottom and actually made his lip kind of bulge... horrifying! The dentists said to let it do its own thing, it won't fuze to the other tooth etc (I got two opinions because I didn't like the first, but they both said the same! Personally, I'd have it removed, the constant pressure of something like that must be maddening. Johnny's did in time, just fall off the other tooth but as it grew upward you could see the baby tooth begin to become translucent and could even see the roots of baby tooth kind of sprawled along the grooves in the sides of the adult tooth... freaked me out and poor Johnny too!) Swelling and all didn't last long though, let me know how it goes okay?... (Thinking of taking Johnny to the vet LOL)

Ok, I just called his vet, who is very good, he can't see Shadow until next Wednesday at 4:00 pm.  Hopefully I hope he will be fine.  I'm going to give him ice chips and baby him until then...  I told them what was going on and they said since he made 1 in November, he will have to have it pulled since it didn't fall out.  I don't know if I can stand being in the room with him when they do that.  I couldn't be in the room with my human babies when they got their shots.  The nurses knew it too and they didn't mind...But Shadow getting a tooth pulled.  I don't know.  I just don't want him to be in pain and uncomfortable.

Pepper had the same thing happen. Same one too! Ice works well, our vet said if it doesn't come out by around 7 months they would consider taking it out. Before that, they are still developing and it may very well still come out on it's own. They have to sedate the dog for pulling a tooth, so don't have them do it if you don't have to.
