Hi Everyone,

I have a quick question for any of the experts out there. We just got our second Rattie (Molly) who had one button ear, one erect ear when we picked her up. Then for two weeks they were both erect, but now they are both button. What's going on? Is this going to continue or will they finally go up permanently?

We call this the "Ear Wars". All puppys go through this stage as the cartiliage in their ears gets hard.

Jeters have been button, one up, one sideways, back to half button.........he is 6 months now and they are still trying to figure it out. Jacks didn't stand until he was almost a year and they were standing @12 weeks then buttoned for awhile. You just never know with these guys!!

Maggies are dependent on her mood. Wake up time...down. Play time...up. Everyday activity....one up one down. They sort of reflect her mood. It's really cute though and it adds to their expression. Maggies have never really stayed up!

Button, on the left of my avatar, had the ear wars for 2-3 months. They were both erect only 2-3 weeks and then the left ear buttoned down for good. Silly looking, but we've learned to like it. Zipper's were always button. She was a stray and may have had poor nutrition at a critical period in her growth.. I love all type ears on these dogs, so no matter what type, I like them.

My Maggie's have always been the button ears.  Had to get used to it, but now like the way they look.

Bob went through the ear wars and the erect position won out at around 6 months. He will lay them back when he's scared and sometimes they are in the Flying Nun position, but 98% of the time they are erect.

Part of the ear wars is teething and the doggies teeth for quite a while. Up down and in between and changes from day to day sometimes. Growing all their teeth is a major factor in all this strangeness. When the teeth all come in the wars are over and that is how they stay.

Having some kind of browser issue & can't post my own thread for some reason. I apologize for hijacking a simlar one!
Now, before I get myself into trouble, I want to make clear that I love B-boy in a way that has nothing to do with his ears & what they look like. I just think he'd look so handsome if they both did the same thing! He's a year old now and still has one stubborn ear that won't stand for anything. It almost did when he was about 5 months - even stood once in a while when he was really excited - but it seems it's given up. I've read in the standard that asymmetrical ears are a fault. Otherwise Bandit is a perfect specimine as far as I can tell (will be tested at 2 of course) and his temperament (to someone who grew up in a housefull of dogs with a dad that trains them professionally) is out of this world. I'd love to breed him if/when he matures fully, maybe even try to show him, but I'm afraid the ear will be counted against him. What I know of biology tells me that symmetry has more to do with development than genetics, but that's not how the standard is written & I'm not sure most people would understand.

I've considered trying taping it up for a couple of weeks, just to see if it would do the trick. The ear is so close and he really would look so good. Please don't yell at me for not loving him the way he is - I really do & it has nothing to do with the way he looks or any kind of standard. If I'd found him a little sooner he'd still have a full tail... Any advice for getting a stubborn ear up would be appreciated.

I don't think there is much you can do about it. It is what it is and may only count against him if you are trying to show. I think for breeding it shouldn't be an issue though. He looks like a handsome man there!

Yep--Ratties' ears pretty much do what they want to when they want to, since they are "natural" ears and not cropped or anything.  However, when I had my dobie's ears cropped, she had one stubborn ear that didnt want to stand like the other one, and my vet said it was just a lazy ear muscle.  Every time I had her close enough to me, I would constantly massage that ear close to the base of her head, and I'll admit,. I did put a piece of black stiff tape inside that ear and it irritated her to let her ear drop, so she forced it to stand. About 2 weeks of that was all it took for her ears to both stand the same way.  That was 4 years ago when she was a puppy, though.

Electron's ears were up when she was little. Frankly they were huge and she looked like a bat. Now they are button unless she stands into the wind and ta da...we have a bat again. They are like little sails, I'm afraid if the wind blows too hard she might blow away.

My girls are over a year old and are STILL having their ear wars! Mostly Lucy...her ears are standing up more lately...when she's hungry or sleepy. Then they go back to the flying nun's ears. You can really tell what sort of mood they are in by their ears.

i was told the backwards ear thing is related to teething...
