I've had dogs that scooted a lot when they needed their anal glands cleaned. Monti every so often (especially when he is in deep sleep) will all of a sudden smell fishy like sardines from his butt, it isn't a GOOD smell. LOL Then he jumps down and tries to clean himself but if he is on your lap it leaves the smell on your clothes.
Is this an anal gland problem? He's recently adopted, (Last Monday) from a local shelter so I just wondered if they would have even noticed it with the other dogs all around.
Thanks, Michelle

| I'd give it a try, but no clue how? I used to care for my sheep (over 80 head) llamas (36) horses (4) and cattle, did shots, worming, etc. But never done anal glands. Too afraid of hurting them! |

| Alright.. You should usually do this AFTER you give your dog a bath .. its just more convient since the dog is in the bath tub but any who. Take you thumb and pointer finger and put your pointer finder on one side of the anus and the thumb on the other. Please watch your face... ok now apply pressure like your trying to make your fingers touch almost pintching the anus I guess.. nasty stuff will fly out like you poped a zit.. its gross I got some on my hand.. so if you dont want it on you.. use gloves. =) |

Thanks BryanC I'll give that a try this weekend. He isn't scooting, just that bad smell so I wasn't sure? How often should this be done? And I think I'll wear gloves! LOL I've been wormed before when giving tube wormer to llamas so I'm pretty immune to "nasty" and up to my arm pits in a cows before, so gross doesn't scare me. I just don't want to hurt HIM! |

| That WAS a well-done video. She does a better description of the upward motion. I didn't realize the sac was elongated with the opening at the TOP. I have never had luck because I was only squeezing inward, but from her description in the video, I can see why I wasn't having luck. Gotta push UP, too. Think I'll start trying it myself now and see how it goes. |

Sounds like they are expressing on their own and functioning normally, in which case you should probably leave them alone. I have read that they only need to be manually expressed when they are impacted and not expressing on their own- in that case there is a possibililty of the fluid building up and the gland rupturing and abcessing. You may want to call your vets office and ask their opinion. |

I'm sorry Peggy, I had to laugh at your enthusiasm! Only one of us "dog nuts" would get excited over learning we needed to push "up" to get the nasty stuff to squirt out!

| How do you know when the are impacted? Is the smell and scooting on the floor the only signs? |

Ya that sound just like what candie was doing, i smelled her and she was fishy smelling. So we took a trip to the Bath room and i solved the problem. And the smell whent a way, then she stoped scooting. |

| By the way, we have this perfected now, and Monti hops into the tub for his "cleaning" when I pull back the shower curtain, I do it about once every week, and the smelly stuff never oozes out now! Just takes a second! |

| I'm wondering about something....I've never had a dog where we've had to do this. But I've noticed two of my dogs sometimes will "leak" something brown....it's got a distinct odor that doesn't smell like anything else. And it doesn't happen but maybe a couple times of year. Could this be the anal gland thing? I'll notice my chihuahua, for example, will get up off my lap, and there will be a tiny brown spot with another circle spot around it, almost like when something wet bleeds outward, if that makes sense. And the smell is just awful, but not like poo. Just wondering if this is the gland thing, so that I can do whatever needs to be done. I notice it on the covers sometimes, and promptly throw them in the wash. It really skeeves me. LOL |

I just had this issue with Blade not long ago. You could tell it was impacted because one side of his anus was huge and felt like a rock. I watched the video and expressed the gland. I took him to the vet and he said that small dogs are more prone to this and feeding them hard food should help express the glands when they go poo. He told me to use calendula creme on his sore butt. It was completely clean and healed within three days. If it is impacted sometimes forcing the anal sac can rupture, which is what happened with Bladey. Poor guy. One time when I had Jimmy, he got scared and it just flew out. It smells really gross. Make sure to use gloves and like you mentioned, don't have your face too close. An old shirt or towel is recommended to cover your clothes. Yikes! In my 13 years of having dogs this was the first time I ever had to express glands. |
