Good information to have in case of emergency.

My dog ate a bone. My puppy swallowed a chicken bone. My dog swallowed something sharp. My puppy ate glass! What can we do?

Cotton ball (cottonball) remedy really works!

What you need:

Use cotton balls that are made of 100% cotton. Do not use "cosmetic puffs" as these are made from man-made fibers and do not work like the 100% cotton ones.

Next, get a quart of Half & Half coffee creamer or if you prefer, use Liverwurst (a type of meat sausage which spreads easily on bread) or something you know your dog loves and will not reject.

What to do: Help dog who ate chicken bone. Dog ate chicken bone

Tear the cotton balls into small pieces and soak them in the Half & Half or generously smear Liverwurst on the cotton balls. The whole idea is to get something you know your dog will eagerly eat, onto that cotton ball as quickly as possible. This will begin the process of bringing the foreign object out of your dogs system SAFELY

Feed the cotton balls to your dog one at a time. Do not force your dog to eat them!  Allow your dog to take them from you one at a time.

If your dog weighs:

5-10 lbs feed- 2 cotton balls.

10-50 lbs feed - 3-5 cotton balls.

50 + lbs feed - 5-7 cotton balls.

Dogs seem to really like these strange "treats" and readily eat them. As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract, it will attract all the glass or bone pieces or any other sharp objects your dog may have swallowed, wrapping itself around them.

Even the smallest bits of the object swallowed will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers. The cotton acts as a protective barrier for the intestinal wall, allowing for the object to be eliminated safely with the dog's next bowel movement.

Expected Results:

Your dog's stools will look strange for a few days but should you see fresh blood or a tarry appearance to the stool, rush your dog to the vet for a checkup but in most cases, the dogs will be just fine. The cotton always comes out with the object safely embedded.

Wow.  Who'd have thought of that!  Thanks Ski!  Although I think my boys would just eat the cottonballs plain!

Thanks Ski, unfortunately I have a terror that may make me actually have to use this info one day. Let's hope not though. Although I'm with sarah, CoCo woud just eat the cotton balls for sport.

Thank you for this information. This could have come in handy over Christmas. Lucy ate a toothpick whole. I didn't know she had gotten it until I woke up in the morning to a pile of puke with a toothpick sticking straight up out of it. Luckily there was no blood in her puke, nor her stools. I was so worried and kept a very close eye on her and everything that came out of here for like a week afterwards.

That's kinda like what a vet years ago recommended for my mini dachshund who swallowed fish bones. He said to soak it in mineral oil (to help dissolve the bones, and bacon grease (to make it appealing to the dog to eat eagerly and the cotton (to pad the journey through the system). Our dog had eaten and entire fish skeleton.  He tipped over the kitchen trash can (for the very first time).  The vet recommended 1-2 cotton balls soaked in mineral oil every hour for half a day. It did the trick!

Good info, maybe Tracey, Morgan or Lance could make it a sticky? That way if one of us has an emergency like this the info will be toward the top of this forum.

Fred ate pistachio's once, shell and all. It had to be so painful coming out but there was no blood and he seemed fine. I could have used this for him! I would guess it's like eating the stuffing out of stuffed animals which Ally really likes, add a little liverwurst and she is in doggie heaven.  Fred does steer clear of nuts now, which is good.

So I think I jinxed myself by reading this as I just had to feed CoCo cotton balls covered in milk because she got into the garbage and pulled out a chicken carcas. I was so scared when i came home and saw it until I remembered this topic. Now I'm just sitting here watching the little booger sleep, hoping she is okay. Gah I'm worried about her, but at the same time, I'm really glad I read this because I am not a basket case, i just feel like a bad mommy.

Her daddy is sick and yesterday I cooked him homeade chicken noodle soup, I just haven't taken the trash to the outside dumpster yet. The trash is in the pantry and she shouldn;t be able to get in there seeing as he is crated when we are not home and the door should have been closed. Apparently though, her daddy decided to fall asleep with her roaming the house and he accidentally left the pantry door open so she decided to make a feast. I came home to her gnawing on pieces of chicken and just started crying. Worst part is Ricky is so knocked out from being sick, he barely responded to my freaking out...

Anyway, Thank you Ski, you saved my sanity. Hopefully CoCo is going to be okay.

CoCo is fine this morning. Ricky didn't even realize anything had happened until I told him. Poor baby, he looks so pitiful and sick I can't even be mad at him. But the little stinker CoCo is being her usual rattie self, but i really kept an eye on her all last night I was worried. Plus i have no idea how much of it or what she ate, it was just in pieces all over my house (yuck). anyway, all is well, and this is very good info.

Thanks, this is great information. My friend's mini-pincher ate a chicken bone and she took him to the vet... came home a day later and $400.00 short.. He had to have surgery... 2 months later, someone stole him from her backyard when he went outside to potty. She never got him back... but if she would have know this she would have saved herself some money. I will remember this if Shadow ever need it.

Great info, does anyone feel great guilt if rattie get something wrong in its mouth?

I was entertianing for the first time since I got her and as careful as I was she got something stuck and started dry heaving. I was out of my mind scared.  It looked like a little piece of something came out, but my insticts told me to give her some water and a tiny picece of food to make sure she could swallow.

Was this the right thing to do?

God, I was so scared for her.  And guilty that she went through it. gonna go get some cotton balls!!

Hi all newbie here, just wanted to add another suggestion given to us by our vet. She told us to give the dogs a piece of wonder bread which will do the same thing as the cotton ball suggestion.
