As some of you may remember, Lucy has gained about 2 pounds since we got her this time last year.  The vet told us that she doesn't want to see Lucy in a year weighing an additional 1 pound and that we needed to get her feeding down.  I guesstimated how much to feed Lucy based off the recommendations on the back of the Nutro bag.  She weighed 7.5 pounds and I went with 2/3 cup of food per day (1/3 for breakfast, 1/3 for dinner).  Also, we don't give her a lot of treats (the mini beggin strips last a long time because we just break off pieces).

Here is what is going on. . .We cut Lucy back to 1/2 cup total per day (1/4 and 1/4).  Sometimes she eats all of it.  Sometimes she skips breakfast and just eats dinner.  Other times, she will eat breakfast and dinner and then lay down beside her bowl later at night asking for more.  I know that dogs are gluttonous by nature and will continue to eat if they are given more food BUT Lucy NEVER asked for more food before.  Any thoughts?

Also, I have done the "checks" for overweight dogs (look for the hourglass before her hips, felt for ribs, and the side view and she tucks up nicely).  No problems on any of them.  Could it be that her weight is up because she has built so much muscle?  I know that I have that problem as a human - I can't look at the numbers on the scale because they do not accurately reflect how I look because of all the muscle I have massed.

Thanks for your thoughts!!

I would keep her at half a cup and see how it goes. It's not unusual for a dog to skip a meal, or even skip food for a day. You can also give her things like eggs and lean meats to make sure she gets enough protein.
