I'm sure y'all are tired of hearing questions about dog food, but I need some advice. Ty doesn't really like dry food by itself so one meal a day I mix it with a little bit of canned. He is fed NB P&D dry and usually he gets the NB canned mixed with it, but the store was out so I got Merrick canned. Ty really likes the Merrick but our vet thinks he has food allergies which is why we put him on NB. Is Merrick a good brand to be feeding if he has food allergies?? It doesn't say if it is grain free or corn/soy/wheat and all that like NB??!?

Hmmmm. It depends on what he has allergies to. Corn, wheat, soy, chicken, beef.......the list goes on. The ingredient list should tell you if any/all are in that. With allergies it is a matter of elimination then adding back one by one to see if he reacts. I would go with it and see how he does. Why do they think its allergies? Also what kind is it, You can get the ingredient list from their site.

http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/dry_dog_food.php  This will show you the ingredients in any Merrick foods.  They are corn free but some have oats, barley, rice, etc. in them.  Those aren't bad ingredients (those grains are healthier than corn) but some dogs will have allergies to other grains....I'm learning this because I think Mayfly may be one of those dogs.   Her hives have finally cleared up on NB Duck/Potatoe just because the ingredients are limited.  Merrick's foods, while good foods, have a lot of extra stuff put in (GOOD stuff but some dogs that are prone to allergies may not do well on it).

Why did the vet say he had allergies?

They were not positive what it was for sure. He was on horrible food, but no one listened to me until he starting getting red skin and itched constantly. That's why we decided on NB bc it didn't have any of the main allergiens in it. I really think he is allergic to corn but I don't know what other things he is allergic to.

Ty ate a ffod that was mostly beef. And the vet said to stay away from meats that he had eaten a lot of lately, like beef and chicken. So I got him the any of the kinds that didn't have chicken, beef, or turkey.

I've been feeding Merrick canned and dry for several months now, and the girls love it. But, I'm seeing some issues with their skin they didn't used to have. I'm going to try something new, just not sure what yet.

If it's just corn he's allergic to then Merrick should be fine for him, no corn in it.
Has his skin gotten better since being off any food with corn in it?

He has been much better since he has been on Natural Balance but I don't know if he is also allergic to grains and I know that Merrick has grains in it. There is a good possiblity that it was just the low quality food making him have skin issues. I just don't want to go through all that itchiness again!

I know what you mean. Mayfly had hives and I finally decided to stop feeding anything but NB Duck/Pota. and see what happened. She cleared up BUT I may never know exactly what she was allergic to in the other foods. (Didn't feed corn or wheat).

Exactly! I guess I'm just alittle shell shocked from it all. He was miserable for so long. Is there any toher brand of canned food that has an allergy formula?

Yes, both! Never had a problem when I was feeding Nutro. Maybe it is not the food. I thought maybe it is something in the yard, but it's not on their feet, or Savannas belly (she is grass/weed height!) Not fleas either, so I'm just not sure. Food is an easy change. I'll be shopping tomorrow.

Fuji is on Nutro Ultra and has never had a problem. His coat is beautiful.

Nature's Recipe has a canned Allergy Formula:

Natural Balance also has a canned Allergy Formula....is that what you have already been feeding?

Yeah, he had been eating the NB allergy formulas but since the store was out I got Merrick. There are a few typrs of Merrick that don't have any of the main allergien producers, but I'll probably just drive the extra 30 minutes and get NB for him next time.

We started feeding canned Merrick in several different flavors and his skin started acting up again, I have no idea what he actually is allergic to, but something in it bothered him... Now he's on Orijen and his skin is acting up again so we'll see, he did fine on regular Innova, I guess if it ain't broke I shouldn't keep trying to fix it!
