So, I have a question for all the owners out there that have a neutered dog.  I recently had Rambo neutered (about 2 months ago) and since then he has gained 2 pounds (going from 7 to 9) which is like 20% of his body weight and he had had a large amount of hair loss.  He has lost most of his hair around his neck area, and butt area.  Have any of your doggies had this happen?  I talked to my vet about it last week when he went in for his annual exam/shots and they said it was because of his sudden drop in testosterone.  Just wondering what everyone thinks on here about it.  I knew they could gain weight, but didn't know about the hair loss....

They did do a skin scrapping to check for any disease, it came back negative.  He hasn't shown any s/s of allergies, not on a new dog food, no itching, etc...

Thanks for everyone input!

Just looked up neutering and hair loss on msn seach and it said this: Neutered dogs have also been known to develop hormone-responsive alopecia (hair loss). So I guess it isn't going to grow back...

Wow..I don't know. I'm sure he'll be okay. It's a very good sign that the skin scraping showed no issues. Poor baby!

I never knew anything like this could happen! I'm glad other than that he's ok though.

Mic was neutered when he was two, he gained the weight a little... but not the hair loss. I never heard of that either, the vet didn't mention that when he was going through the list of "what to expect after..."

I didn't expect it either, I guess it is not that common. But he is still healthy, just a little hairless on his chest, it is very soft though..

He is such a purty boy! I'm sure he is still beautiful with a little hair loss. My grandpa was bald and I still loved him as much as always.....Great that it's not a skin issue though. With a name like Rambo I don't think anyone will be teasing him about it. LOL

Poor puppy. Shiloh did the weight gain thing too but so far hasn't had any hair loss... But um, her mommy did the hair loss thing after hysterectomy. I no longer work in a salon but still hold my license in cosmetology. Had to learn all sorts of things about hair growth. here's what I know: Alopecia can sometimes be reversed by stimulating the hair folicles. Hair loss happens because of many things but when its hormonal, likely as not its not due to the hair folicles being dead. Try a super soft brush. Brush his entire coat with it as well as the bald patches. You can also massage the bald places to help stimulate blood flow. May help some. Certainly can't hurt! Good luck rambo is quite the looker, I'd be bummed too but I agree with vespagirl, bald can be beautiful! Smiles, at least it's not something that's going to cause him any pain.

Its a new one for me too! But my dogs don't usually get neutered unless they have another home. I know that stress will sometimes cause hair loss.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Thanks for all your input guys!!! I know he isn't stress. It really doesn't matter to me how he looks, you can only tell if you look at his neck.

Never heard of that but Skipper is our first neutered dog...he was neutered in February about 2 months before we got him. And as thin as he was when we got him I don't think the neutering made him gain weight. Now, I DO have to watch his weight now (as well as M&M's) on the Natural Balance food!
