Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have a 18-month old, 27-lb. rat terrier. He's developed a nasty cough over the past few months -- it sounds like he's coughing up phlegm. He's actually coughed up phlegm twice. The cough is prominent when he is lying down/sleeping.

We took him to the vet, and she said not to worry -- he has a sagging membrane, which is apparently common in small dogs. Essentially, his throat is too small for his body.

Has anyone else had this problem with their rat?

Thank you!

Did your vet check him for heart worms? I understand that a nagging cough can be a sign of heartworms.

He was checked -- all clear. The next step is x-rays.

I've never heard of a sagging membrane. I have a chi-terrier mix that has a collapsed trachea and he sounds like that if his throat is irritated...this condition is common is small dogs....I think in his case it's probably from his chi blood.
