Yogi had Demodectic mange and was on oral treatment (ivermectin-4cc daily) and it was finished 2 weeks ago.

It (mange)was on his front legs and throat when rescued from the county-shelter before me...NOW it has returned with a vengeance on his throat just the past few hours.

I just put him on Revolution yesterday...and his throat is now red...could that cause a reaction? The fleas are still on him (was on Frontline via Rescue group) and running around like crazy! I keep picking them off! UGH!

Could the Revolution affect his immune system? I have him on "Taste of the Wild" (Bison and Elk...no fillers) food as well as "Missing Link" powdered supplement to rebuild his immune system....

I guess I should take him to the vet soon...just got him 3-4 weeks ago.

he is a year old.

Anyone else deal with this mange and what happened???????

THANKS!!!! LadyDi

First, I think Revolution has caused some bad reactions in dogs....someone posted about this a few weeks ago so you might do a search for that in the Health/Diet Forum. I used it once but never again after reading about the side effects.

Second, for the mange there is a home treatment that has worked for a few people on here. It's posted in this forum, too. It's 1 part hydrogen peroxide, 2 parts warm water and about 3 tablespoons of Borax...mix. Wash dog with mild shampoo. Then pour on mixture (be careful to keep out of eyes!) and do NOT rinse off. Don't dry them either or let them roll on anything to dry off. Do this for a couple of days in a row. I used it on Mayfly, even though she didn't have mange just allergies, and her tummy has cleared up nicely.

Now I remember, it wasn't a bad reaction to Revolution. It was because they have found it doesn't protect from heartworm like it was supposed to. I can't find the post right now but the vet told this member not to use the Revolution anymore for heartworm control. Just FYI.

Thanks "Mitzie's"!!!!!   I will try the Hydrogen Peroxide....The Revolution is , according to my several Vets...ALL of them are NOT 100 % against

heartworm infestation. I find this really wierd

I have always had Labs and rescues...never a prob with "Revolution"!

I am so inept tech so this makes no sense!

It was me that posted about revolution. My vet took my dog off of it because they have had dogs come in with "heartworm failure" after having been on revolution. I have my dogs on heart guard and a flea preventative now.

Thanks all for the info!! I am learning to google and research...finally!!! HEHHEH! I have now tried the BORAX-Peroxide dip...will see if it clears up the throat. It DOES make him smell so clean AND sooo soft. I also added in a little Baking Soda to the wash. And some(8th tsp) of the Borax in the drinking water.

By the way....I asked several Vets (one a friend of mine) about the "Revolution" dilemma...they all stated that ALL the heartworm meds have a small failure rate...except ivermectrin, which kills all parasites, and can also kill herding breeds and young pups. (It's nasty stuff.) No matter what Heartworm preventative the dog is on it needs to be checked regularly for failure.

Happy New Year Everyone!!!!! LadyDi

Yes, all dogs need to be tested annually for heartworms.  I believe it is collies and related breeds that are susceptible to having bad reactions from Ivermectin and that one gene is responsible which they can now test for: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/

My worry is that the heartworms will become immune to the Ivermectin...then what?

Doesn't that Borax-peroxide solution make them feel so soft?  I thought that, too, with Mayfly.  And her skin is much better.

It worked for my pups too... and it helps if they are extra stinky lol.

hi all! I am, from now on, going to bathe Yogi in that solution...ONLY. No more shampoos!

He smells clean and fresh (like airdried laundry...hehheh!) Soft as a kitten and I SWEAR his throat mange looks better already!!! (And his white is whiter) And not a flea anywhere! (prob the Revolution kicking in, but I read that the Borax-peroxide mix kills off fleas and eggs as well...and the drinking water solution helps from within.)

I will give him 2-3 more dips over the next few days then see if it completely clears up.
If it does work...I think all of our Vets should try it as an alternative to toxic drugs.

The diet-change to no-filler high protein(rescue group had him on Science crap) might be helping too altho he eats like a little bird. (wish "I" did!!! ;-)

He's probably getting filled up quicker on high quality food.

You know, I THOUGHT Mayfly looked whiter! LOL I agree that vets should suggest owners try this dip first before the strong drugs.
