Well, if you guys remember, the last time we took Trixi on a long road trip ( 2 hours) she puked the whole time!
On Saturday, we are leaving for a LOOOOOOONG trip from Virginia to Florida...sooo...I called the vet last week to ask about medication he could prescribe and he asked about her symptoms and her weight and he said he can get her some anti-nausea medication....
so....i called today to see if it was ready, and they said that they have ACE? im not sure if thats what they said....Michael is picking it up as we speak.....they said she can have 1/2 tablet every 8 hours and got us 8 tablets....
anyone know anything about this ACE? i will try to look online.....hopefully it will help the poor thing...... anything you guys know will help me! Thanks! |

I think this is it...anyone have experience with it? Acepromazine Acepromazine is one of the most commonly used tranquilizers in veterinary medicine. It is a phenothiazine compound. Its mode of action is only partially understood but it involves blockage of dopamine nerve receptors in the brain. It causes tranquilization and also has an anti-emetic effect. This makes it especially useful for treating car sickness, since that is often a combination of fear and motion sickness in dogs. The recommended dosage for acepromazine is 0.25mg to 1mg per pound of body weight. In most cases it is not necessary to use the higher dosages. That is not true for use in trying to control fear based aggression. Acepromazine is considered to be very safe. The average toxic dose is significantly higher than the recommended dosage (at least 20 times the dose). Despite this, acepromazine does have some significant effects that must be considered. It can cause hypotension (lowering of blood pressure). This effect may be exaggerated in Boxers and there have been anecdotal reports of death of Boxers after the use of acepromazine. In addition, acepromazine seems to make it easier for dogs with seizure disorders to have a seizure. This medication should not be used near the time of dipping or treatment with organophosphates for flea control. Acepromazine doesn't have any pain-killing effects. Many dogs seem to be able to will themselves to overcome its effects, at least temporarily. This makes it less than ideal as a drug for dealing with aggressive or fearful dogs but there have not been better alternatives for medicating prior to the visit. It works often enough that many vets will try this approach first. We do this when we think it has a chance of helping make an office visit go easier. We just remember to continue to be very careful when examining the dog. |

| I only know it as a fairly strong horse tranquilizer, I don't know how much it puts a dog "out" or how long the effects last. Sorry. |

| Mary... sorry ... I know nothing about this stuff. Honestly I've never had a dog with that issue, so the situation has never arisen to where I had to look into it. But... I hope it works for Trixi... |

| Used it, loved it! It worked on my camper who when he was younger had very bad car anxiety, her cried and puked. The car wasn't his friend at all. I say use it, you may not like it I liked that camper slept the whole trip. Also if trixi moves in the car I would say crate her in the car, make sure the crate doesn't move and cover the crate. Often the dark wil calm them down, and the crate if she has one can be a place of comfort. but make sure the crate doesn't move, seatbelt it down. |

I only know it as a fairly strong horse tranquilizer, I don't know how much it puts a dog "out" or how long the effects last. Sorry. they said only a half a pill every 8 hours....maybe ill see how it works...and then switch to ramamine if it seems to strong...hmmm im a little worried.....i guess i will jsut try |

just another thing to mention..... I don't know if you have heard rescue remedy? Sometimes rescue remedy is used on dogs to help to calm them down, and it is suppose to be all natural.... Even people use it too.... i used it on Kasey once, during the 4th of july week... and that seems to keep him calm from all the fireworks noise from outside....
but I don't blame you for getting something for your dog for the ride.... I had to do the same thing for one of my cats.... even for just a 15 minutes car ride to the vet.... otherwise she gets carsick....
Good luck!! |

We took Winchester on a 22 hour ride to texas and back each way. he did better than the humans...he enjoyed looking out the window, and getting out to walk at the rest areas. it was a new adventure for him. Brielle, on the other hand, pukes a few miles down the road. Just depends on the dog...
