For those of you that read about and offered so much moral support due to Shiloh's accident, I wanted to post this bit of advice from our local vet. Might be nice to have this stuff on hand for any type of accident, animal or human!
Yesterday the vet called and offered a liquid called chlorhexodine for Shiloh's wounds. We picked it up and I've been using it in a spray bottle on Shiloh's belly. It seeems to help it not sting, the vet said she swears by it, has a gallon bottle on the back of the sink in her kitchen for use at home for animals as well as humans. She said it's so good for burns that she uses it on herself. It is a cleanser as well as helps the skin to regenerate and keeps it from drying and cracking. You spray it on and dab it back off. Seems like really good stuff. She said she'd recommend it to anyone, not just pet owners. Must be good if she uses it on herself. Thought youall might want to know. Apparently alot of vets use it and likely will just give you a small jar to take home if you ask. They buy it in industrial size bottles. I think it would be worth asking for!
The vet rescues animals also and had rescued a litter of 8 week old kittens that had been severely neglected. Apparently the owners just moved away, leaving behind a very pregnant cat. One little girl was born with no tail and was incontinent. It had sat in a corner of a dark, cold garage since its birth in December. (It was below freezing here for all of December and January this year.) Apparently the siblings didn't want anything to do with it nor did momma cat. How it held on that long was anybody's guess.
They almost missed this little baby while collecting its siblings. As they were leaving, the vet said she heard a faint squeak and turned her head. Huddled there on the bare concrete floor was this tiny kitten. Because it couldn't control its bowels or urine and was so cold, its poor little bottom was stuck to the floor. She said she had to use warm water to extract the kitten's bottom from the frozen concrete. When she got her to her vet clinic, she discovered that this poor baby's vulva was entirely missing. Eaten away by gangrene. She did surgery to remove al the dead tissue and figured her efforts were in vain. She didn't expect kitty to make it through the night.
As we know, animals are very resilient, and this little darling survived. She said that the cleaning agent she used before and after the surgery and during the 3 month recovery was this spray she advised me to use. Liquid chlorhexodine. 'Kitty" will always have to wear a diaper due to her birth defect and the injuries caused by her neglect but otherwise is just fine. Even the scarring on this little half bald cat isn't bad. She rides everywhere the vet goes in a specially made car seat, has her own clothes and looks just plain odd but she's the most grateful, social, loving animal you'd ever hope to meet.

| Poor little kitty! Your vet has a heart of gold. Most vets would probably have euthanized the kitty. |

That's a bittersweet story. My vet (and friend) rescues cats also. Let's see - I think the count is up to 20 or so at her (our) barn, the house, the shed . . . It's amazing how people will neglect animals, but I sometimes think cats have it harder than dogs in that department. |

Oh wow! what a heart warming story that is! Most places would have put her to sleep. I have used chlorhexodine before...great stuff!

That brought tears to my eyes. I'm an animal lover, if Adam would let me, we'd have a zoo. That is really special when someone takes a animal to heart like that when it may have been eaiser to put it down. |
