 Attention Starved

Jeter had had mystery bumps on the top of his head for about a month now. He got some animax cream last vet appt. to put on 2-3 times a day for 14 days. It seemed to have helped but they are still there. I have also been giving him Benadryl to see if that helps. They are like little pimple like things on the top of his head, no where else. thet were scabbed over as he was itching them, but since the cream he pretty much leaves them alone so they are healing. I was wondering if Nibbler ever got results from whatever test it was that they did on them? He was checked for Mange and that was negative. Nothing else has change and he seems real young for allergies (this started about 4 months of age) They aren't too bad, just wondering if anyone had ideas. I was thinking if this doesn't make them go away totally I would try Paul's Borax solution. |

| Maybe he has acne...I know it sounds weird, but I know some RT's carry the AHT gene, and actually sweat and secrete oils like people. I'd say try a mild antibacterial soap like dial a couple times a week and see if that does anything. You just don't want to over dry since it usually only aggravates skins conditions. |

| Hmmmmm. Never thought of that! I might just have to look into that. I have a medicated shampoo I got from the vet a while ago for Jack, would that work? It's basically an antibacterial shampoo, smells funny though! |

| I've used Paul's borax/peroxide mix on Mayfly and it really soothed her skin. She didn't have bumps though...she has hives. The solution won't get rid of those obviously since it must come from allergies. |

The borax solution should sooth the places with broken skin. Mayfly's hives aren't raised....they are just red spots/blotches on her skin....I've had hives, too, that looked like that. Tuesday when I went to work I left a sweatshirt on her and when I got home she had big splotch under her arm from getting too hot....temperature hives. Her skin is so darn sensitive! I washed her in the solution and it soothed it but I think the main benefit from that solution is to disinfect and also to kill the mange mites in the hair follicles. So, since Mayfly doesn't have mange and her splotches don't usually get scabbed over...it won't fix the problem. |

Sorry it took me so long to reply! It's been hectic. Nibbler's mystery bumps turned out to be a bacterial skin infection. This happens especially in puppies who have had demodectic mange and/or who do not have strong immune systems yet. Paul's borax solution pretty much assures that it is not mange if they are still there, but it helps A LOT with the itching. Sounds to me that Jeter may have the same thing for the following reasons: 1. Nibbler's bumps looked like little pimples and had scabs after a couple of days. They did not hurt him to be touched at all. 2. Our vet said that they seemed like hives as well and prescribed Tempril-P (I think that's how it is spelled) for the itching, it is an antihistimine and a small dose of steriod 3. That and benedry did not work, and the only thing that helped with itching was Paul's Borax (I think what you are using may be better since it is topical) When they didn't go away, she finally did a scraping to test for mange and she concluded that it is a skin bacteria. Since we didn't have any other dogs at the time, she only told us that it wasn't contagious to us. However, I dont' think Jack is at risk since he is older. Nibbler was on antibiotics for two weeks and within 3 or so days the bumps had cleared completely, now that's left are little patches that look like they could be scars or soemthing, but the fur is growing back there. I would suggest that if they don't go away in a few days to take Jeter back to the vet. According to our vet Nibbler's were already at the pustulant stage, which means that the next step would have possibly been open sores, as a matter of fact there was one was was already about to turn into a sore. |

| Well then! THANK YOU! That is exactly what it sounds like. The animax has a little steroidal and antibacterial effect. She thought a bacterial infection also and said she would put him on oral ABx if it didn't clear up. To be honest, I slacked a little and they came back again, so I am being diligent now with the cream and it looks like they are slowly healing. Nurses are the worst patients, you'd think we'd know better! heehe Thanks, I remembers Nibbler's problems and thought they sounded just like Jeters. |
