Have you ever been SO upset and mad you just cry?
My brother has a 17-year old husky mix named Elmo. When he came down from Michigan for the holidays, he brought Elmo and Gracie (his 2-year old Weimaraner who is crazy) with him. Elmo is in bad shape, and has been going downhill for a few months now. My brother has been trying to just keep him comfortable. Well, yesterday Elmo couldn't get up. He's deaf and doesn't know where he is. SO sad. I told my brother the time had come to put Elmo to sleep. He agreed.
Awhile ago I get a call from him asking for my vet's name, assuming that he was calling to make arrangements for Elmo. NO... he was calling because Gracie has a rash and he needs to get it checked out. So I ask him... "What about Elmo?" His response to me was..."I'm going to take him in the barnyard and put a bullet in his head". I thought he was kidding, so I told him it wasn't a funny joke. He said he wasn't kidding... that it would be painless (how does HE Know?) and quick and inexpensive.
Guys... I lost it on the phone with my brother here at work. I called him every name in the book and told him I was taking off work.. coming to get Elmo... and take him to my vet to have him put to sleep and that I would pay for it.
End result? He said if I would pay for it, he would take him to my vet ...
I am furious right now... What in the H*ll is WRONG with people? And this is my brother for goodness sake! He's had this dog 17 years... does Elmo not have the right to leave this world peacefully?????????????
I'm still not sure I'm not going to leave work to make sure he does what he agreed to do. Help me understand people! The older I get the less tolerance I have with idiots... |

WHHHHAAAAAATTT?? First of all...what kind of person would WANT to put a dog down this way...much less be able to pull the trigger...i would hope that after having him for 17 YEARS that he would not truly be able to do this...even if it was quick and painless, which we do not know, HOW COULD HE ACTUALLY DO IT? wow...im shocked! poor Elmo..I hope he gets to go peacefully. He deserves that. |

| i can't believe he would consider "putting a bullet in his head" after he has that dog for 17 years. You would think he would have deep feelings for the dog and because of them do what is only right for the dog. Some people make me so crazy. After having a dog 17 years, why put a price on what is right. |

| I am so sorry Nora. I have a simliar story about my stepson's grandfather. Before I knew his father. He owns a trailriding business. Well, a horse would get sick and instead of caring for it he'd shoot it. My sister worked for him a long time ago as a teenager (smallworld). He went to shoot a sick horse he had and missed! It got him across the muzzle and he took off running. Eventually he "finished" what he was set to do. I just can;t believe some people. He stopped doing stuff like that after getting reported many times over. I am gld he is letting you do it the right way, although I don;t understand people that have animals yet don't want to "pay" for them. If you are going to entrust an animals life in your hands then you need to do whats right to take care of it. |

OMG!!! That is just horrible! I hate stories like this. I knew a guy that thought this would be a 'quick and painless and CHEAP' way of putting his old dog down...well, it went bad and his dog didn't pass quickly and suffered and they ended up having to call a vet to come out to the house and euthanize the poor old guy properly. It was an absolutly horrendous event. Shame on these people who have no regard for the life of the animals who have been so devoted to them for so many years. |

Sarah... that's exactly what I told him... that Elmo DESERVED to die peacefully, and putting a bullet in his head is NOT what I think is "peaceful" at all. I was crying on the phone. ... begging him not to do that... He's from the "old school" where evidentally people used to do that sort of thing. When he said it was "painless".. I asked him "HOW DO YOU KNOW???" Gosh darn, I am so put out with him... I have an idiot for a brother... |

Thanks, Sarah... for making me smile a little. :=) I AM the only person in my family who puts emphasis on training their animals. My brother and his wife have 5 dogs.. (the latest is a new min-pin pup who is wild)... and their house and everything in it smells like pee and the furniture has been chewed. I've even offered to come there and show them some things. They simply don't see the value in it. How can you NOT see the value in it? I don't get it... I don't understand this mentality at all. Would people consider not training their children? Or... would they take a sick child and out and put a bullet in his/her head? What about elderly parents... ?? I could go on and on and on... I'm really on a roll this morning ... :=( |

| Wow Nora! I would flip to! It's so sad. However, here in Texas, thats what the cowboys/farmers/ranchers do to their horses, cows, dogs, sheep or whatever animal that may not be well and is better off... I TOTALLY AGREE, its a horrible way for them to go!!! For goodness sakes Nora, please go get Elmo and have him put to rest before your brother takes the matter in his own hands!!!!! |

I guess I should apologize for venting this way... I usually don't do this. I could truly relate some horror stories as they relate to idiot dog owners (will spare you that!)... but this is a FAMILY member acting this way for gosh darn sakes!
Here we are pulling together to save so many of these dogs... and he's wanting to take his out and put a bullet in his head!! I don't believe there is ANYone on this forum who would consider doing such a thing !

| Oh Nora, I'm so sorry to hear about this. It's SOOOOOO sad. The people that had Sadie before we got her were going to "put a bullet in her" if no one adopted her, and she was less than a year old at the time. Even though she died young, and not exactly the most painless way to die, she felt more love with us in 2 months. I can't imagine that ANYONE would be able to do that. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this, and so close to the holidays at that. |

Nora, can you threaten to tell your mom on him? Just kidding, I know you wouldn't want to upset your mom. Are you sure he was really serious and wasn't just trying to aggravate you? If he was serious, you need to hit him upside his head when you go get Elmo. Can you just imagine the betrayal that dog would feel if he could see your brother about to shoot him? And to answer your question earlier, YES! There are some people who won't consider training their children. We see them in the library all the time. |

Oh gosh Nora, I had a relative like that, too. He was my 3rd cousin and raised Arabian horses up in the PA mountains. He taught me a lot about horses but he also did things like not spaying/neutering his cats so he ended up with a litter of inbred cats that looked like kangaroos! At least though a boarder took them home....otherwise he would have drown them in the lake.
It's just a backward, old fashioned way of thinking. He was a nice guy except for that! |

I know this is going to be hard to believe, and it is DEFENTIALY not my mind set; Some people believe that shooting there own animals, not taking them to a stranger (vet) is more peaceful for the animal. Me I say nora GO GET ELMO and make sure he knows he was loved as he passes on to rainbow bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I've heard stories. Hunting labs that live for the hunt, get too old and feeble they can't do what they love best. The owner will take them on their last hunt. Just as the command is given to go forward, shotgun in hand and dog excited, they are shot! I think it may be an unspoken act that can happen. Nora, I'm so sorry you had to hear this from your brother. I hope above hope that he wanted to get your reaction. He knows how much you value life with these animals. He wanted to get you to pay for the final demise. |

Oh, I'm sorry. I think you got all the compassion and common sense genes. At least he is willing to get Gracie vet care for her rash. Too many oldtimers would just put vaseline or axle grease on it and let it go.
Where exactly was he going to do the horrible deed? On your family farm? On your property? Would he give Elmo a burial? |

yes, Pam.... in the barn lot (remember where the two big barns are?). I did talk to him a few minutes ago... he is going to take Elmo to the vet today and have him put to sleep, and I agreed to pay for it. Small price to pay... however much it is... for a kindness shown to a dog who has devoted 17 years to his human. Geez... I'm still aghast over all of this. My stomach is in knots... and I told him awhile ago that it's a crying shame that I have such an uncaring person for a brother. He hung up on me... but I DID get my point across to him. You know me... I'm not one to sugarcoat things... especially when it's something I'm passionate about. |

Oh Nora, I just read this and I am sick to my stomach. I grew up on a farm and I understand life and death cycles there but for a companion animal who has been with you 17 years...good grief and just because of cost. I can't even begin to imagine trying to do something like that to Aka even if he was old and in pain. I like you would immediately call my vet and hold my baby in my arms and tell him how much I love him and thank him for being my friend. Good grief, I gotta go have a good cry, snuggle my baby and then go to Wilmington, NC to pick up a new brace for my left hand. maybe the drive will help! I'm so sorry you have to go through this and esp. with a family member. It is tough enough with strangers and you are right, I had to leave the Humane Society because it just got so hard to say the same thing over and over to all new folks every day. heavy sigh. I still believe in humane education, I just had to take a break. It can be so hard. Hang in there and I'm sending a big ole dose of mental energy and huggin your way!! So does Aka!! |

Well, Nora, once again you're a dog's angel I'm glad you are able to do this for Elmo's sake. You know, I can think of two instances personally (one involving a cat and one a deer) where this type of thing HAD to be done. It's something most of us would never want to have to do, if there is any way at all it could be done otherwise. It makes you sick to your stomach, and I mean that literally. But I can't wrap my mind around taking your time and deciding to do something like this to a lifelong FRIEND because you want to save some money. |
