Good morning,
We're new here. Thought I'd introduce us. I'm ladyfern and my girl is shiloh, a year old tri-color rat terrier. This past sunday a friend brought their golden lab over to play and she heard the car and ran directly underneath it. She was struck, rolled and burned her abdomen pretty badly. No broken bones and no sign of internal injuries, thankfully but she's pretty beat up. Road rash in all the tender, hairless places. We spent all of Monday at the vet and she's just kind of pitiful. Rat Terriers are notorious for being fearless and for chasing anything that moves. Take heed! Whisper to your lovelies NOT to chase cars, cars win every time. A hard fact poor shiloh has just learned.
Just wanted to say hi and get started here.
Cheers,
ladyfern & shiloh

Thanks for all of the well wishes. I just joined yesterday and haven't yet figured out how to add pictures. The reason shiloh was off her leash is that we have 29 fenced acres of ranch land with a creek running through. Ideal for a high energy dog. Unfortunately the fences are designed to keep cattle in, not little dogs... Her training will have to continue vigorously. We thought we were fairly safe. Turns out I was dead wrong. Well behaved or not, she has a mind of her own. She knows certain engine sounds and was just delighted her friend was coming to see her.(In her head, all visitors come to see just her.) My lap is so dead after having a dog in it for 48 hours! Poor baby!
If someone would be so kind as to tell me how to add pics, I'd be happy to share. I was delighted to find this forum and see all the beautiful ratties out there. They sure become a part of our lives, don't they?

Thanks again for the warm greetings.
Cheers,
ladyfern & shiloh

There is separate forum called Photos: Ratties where you can upload pics ( just resize them down and make sure they're jpeg's). Can't wait to see her.

Glad to have you and Shiloh here---and so glad she wasn't hurt worse in her accident.  They sure can put a scare into us, huh?

Hey, you can add a pic here to your posts, also, by going to your profile and uploading one to your avatar.

Welcome to the forum Ladyfern & Shiloh! I'm so sorry to hear about Shiloh's accident, but am thrilled to hear that his injuries are not life-threatening or anything to cause him to be disabled or marred permanently. Your situation is yet another example to justify us all spending time teaching our dogs to come when called. Shiloh was lucky -- so many more are not so fortunate. We've spent a good amount of time discussing the "come" command on this forum recently and the importance of it. We look forward to getting to know you and Shiloh much better!

I hope you have recovered from the scare it gave you. I'll bet your friend was traumatized too. It would just kill me to accidentally run over a dog, even if it survived.

Thanks, I read everything I could find on here yesterday when I joined regarding the "come" command, although shiloh and I had been working on that and it was going quite well in my estimation BEFORE the accident, now I know we didn't have it down as well as I'd originally thought... As far as the friend that hit her, that's another funny story. It was my daughter's close friend, an 18 year old boy named Nate. He'd been over to 'help' last Thursday to erect a gazebo and that didn't go over well at all. While erecting the gazebo, he pulled an enormous oops and landed a 15'x10' steel and canvas gazebo down on top of him by trying to pull it upright during assembly. Thankfully he wasn't hurt but it destroyed the gazebo. That was Thursday, Sunday he hit the dog. Banner week for the poor kid. He's been here almost ever since, watching over shiloh. I've never seen a kid so very sorry... We were all pretty shook up. Sad but kind of funny too in retrospect, here's a teenage boy trying his level best to impress the parents and all of this happens in the course of a couple of days!

So sorry to hear about the accident. The little guys are quick. Shiloh is so very lucky that it wasn't worse. Hope she gets better soon. That Nate must feel awful, just trying to make a good impression on you and everything goes wrong. Glad to hear he has been checking up on her.

Welcome to the site. I'm glad you found us. Stick around and post tons of pictures.

Welcome to the site. Shiloh is beautiful -- but I'm a bit partial to tri-colored female Ratties! So glad she wasn't injured too badly in the accident-- what a horrifying thing to see happen. And poor Nate.
Look forward to getting to know you and Shiloh in the near future!

At first I thought I'd reply to each of you individually, but goodness! There really are alot of us out there that are nuts about our rat dogs. Thanks for all of your support. It was traumatic but I'll love and spoil her back to health. Thankfully she wasn't hurt worse. Shiloh was a rescued dog so I don't know if she's full rattie or what all she might be but she sure has the traits described here. Intelligent and definitely trainable but full of mischief and curiousity. She was abandoned in a walmart parking lot as a 5-6 week old pup. The head of the county animal rescue pulled a fast one on me at work one day and said here, hold her for me for a minute... Shiloh has been with us ever since. She's such a love. After 4 kids though, having a rat terrier is alot like having 2 year olds again! A real handful but oh so worth it!

Glad to hear she's on the mend, I couldn't imagine how you must have felt when this happened. I can't speak for Diane, but OMG, adding a second rattie is unbelievable. Both of mine are rescues too. Lucky is about three years old and I got him two years ago. Oscar just turned one and I got him about two months ago, thanks to Tracey (DaisysMom) posting his info in the rescue forum.

Happy to hear of so many rescues! They sure are cute playing together. Where are you located? I still cant even describe what I felt when it happened. We live in a tiny town where they roll up the sidewalks on sundays and it seems all emergencies happen on sundays... I'm certified in cpr and firstaid for humans as well as growing medicinal herbs and just went into survival mode. I cleaned her wounds with tepid water and hydrogen peroxide and ground fresh comfrey root to paste over the deepest burn/gash and then tried to keep her from going into shock, head elevated, wrapped in a soft sheet and kept warm, I didn't sleep much the first 48 hours but I hope and pray she makes it, she sure is traumatized. Poor baby!
