Max didn't make it at about midnight last night he was throwing up blood. he was bleeding internally, my vet didn't catch this even after xrays? anyways i rushd him to the emergency vet and they couldn't save him. he started to throw up blood after he stop breathing heavy. now the owners of the pitbulls are going to pay for the vet bills. enough though it doesn't bring any justice to me and won't bring him back. i only had max since friday this is so heartbreaking. i guess you never know how attached you are to your dog until he's gone. thanks everyone for the prayers and everything. oh and the owners of the pit never even apologized

OMG, I am so sorry. I can't even imagine what that must be like. I truly hope you are going to sue them for emotional distress. I would call animal control also. I am at a loss...........

thanks guys............animal control did get called and all they said was "it was an unforunate accident" and while the owners of the pits are laughing over this. i can't believe some people. it took mr forever to find a terrier and now he's gone due to some stupid dog owner who eveidentally is getting away with it. the cops took another report today and said we'll do what we can.

Oh, my God. How horrible. I am so, so sorry. I can't even express it, I just feel sick for your loss. I can't believe the other dog's owners are not even going to be held responsible except for paying vet bills.

Again, I'm so sorry.

OMG! I am just now reading this....I am soo sorry to hear about this awful tragedy.  It makes me so sad to see his precious picture in your avatar.  Max was such a beautiful baby.  I'm wondering if the pit's owners realize his aggressiveness?  I'm guessing he hasn't attacked any other dogs??

I am right with you and believe me when I say I am a dog lover but have ZERO tolerance for this. Especially when their are so many good non agressive dogs needing homes.

You said they were willing to pay the vet bills, but what about everything else you've already spent on the little guy, since you know you probably can't make them do that, I'd see if your vet could give you an exaggerated bill so that you can recoup some of your money ~ I know it doesn't bring Max back or make you feel any better but since you can't really 'do' anything to the owners you can at least hit their wallet......Just a thought.

I am sooo sorry!!!

The more I see this the madder I get. And Bill you certainly didn't set me off with your comment. I'm right with you. As far as the owners of the pits laughing about it, they wouldn't be laughing very long if it were my pup their dog attacked.

I am so sorry about Max. I was so hoping he would be fine today. My thoughts are with you, don't know what I would of done if Bailey hadn't survived her attack. I can't believe the owners are laughing over this, just makes me so mad, I hope this dog doesn't get out again and kill another dog or a child. BTW, the owners of the rottweilers (two) that attacked Bailey said that they were never agressive before either and were just big babies. Again I am so sorry.

Couple of thoughts. One: I would definitely NOT recommend doing anything to the dog. I know and can understand the urge to do so - it would instictive for me as well, but it is not the way to deal with the situation and likely will result in you being the one "in trouble" and the owners of the pit bull still not held accountable.

Do they own or rent (if you know). If they rent, I would contact the landlord and inform him or her that the tenants own a pit bull who now has a "record" of killing a small dog - unprovoked. Ask if the landlord has homeowner's insurance and with who.

If they own, ask for the name of their insurance company and adjuster. If they refuse to give it to you, call the police and ask if it was part of their report. If not, ask if they will attempt to make it part of their report. If they will not, you really ought to consider contacting an attorney. You may want to consider that option regardless of any of the above. If you do find out the name of any insurance company, I would contact them immediately and let them know the situation.

Also, do you live within city/village limits? Certainly there must be some code or ordinance they violated by having a dog (any dog) unrestrained and roaming free.

I would most definitely write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper outlining the facts of what happened and stressing that while you are not opposed to pit bulls in general (if that's the case), you are opposed to any dog with the capability and tendency to kill other animals being allowed to do so at will with no repercussions at all. Ask what message this sends to the community as a whole. Also ask if the animal control officer would have referred to it as a "misfortunate incident" had it been a small child instead of a small dog. Remind them often that YOUR innocent puppy was in his own fenced in yard.

No matter what, I would not just "let it go". These people are obviously too irresponsible to own such a dog, and as much as I love all dogs - including pits, rotts, etc., I would not abide by own that has viciously attacked another dog completely unprovoked. He had to jump a fence for goodness' sake to get to Max!

OMG that is terrible im so sorry for your loss we loved seeing max's pictures on here. I certainly would try to get all the money you already spent on him back. Take him to court if you have to. When you are ready you should check with ratbone to see about getting a puppy, I know they have some listed. I certainly would push the issue with the police as well and like I said go to court if you must, pretty sure a judge wouldnt tolerate this.

*hugs*

You know this reminded me last week we took Pixel for a walk when we got to the end of our street there was a guy out front of his house with 3 dogs unleashed. They were all very large dogs and they came running at us full speed. My husband quickly picked pixel up and held her high. The other dogs returned to the owner when called but there was a full grown what looked like a great dane that wouldnt stop. She was jumping on my husband trying to get at pixel. Now it didnt seem agressive but you never know. Pixel was totally freaked out.

A friend of mine maybe about 2 months ago lost her rescued wire haired terrier (no idea what it was) named Ash. Her grandmother would watch Ash 2 times a week while they were at work. She had Ash at her house and her neighbors dog had previously been agressive towards people including my friend. It was a Lab. The lab knocked her gate down to my friends grandmas yard and attacked Ash, her grandma tried to break it up and got knocked down too. The grandma ended up in the hospital and after several surgeries and about 1.5 weeks in the vet Ash died. They were devistated as well as most of their friends because everyone knew and loved Ash. I dont think that dog was being put down either. The owner of the lab home owners insurance was paying hospital and vet bills. I miss Ash too They are looking for another dog, I should refer them to ratbone rescue now that i think of it.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I can't add any value other than to say Tracey's advice is sound and makes sense.  I'm just too pissed to be diplomatic or objective about this.

Tracey has given you sound advice. I am so sorry for your loss. There are some pups that were just born on the site maybe you could look at them. Ratbones always has several dogs available so there are lots of options for when your ready.

i live just within city limits. the owners of the pit came over just now and said that i've taken it to far. as far as them having to pay the vet bill. i was like YOUR dog jumped MY fenced. Max didn't even do anything to your dog. Max was 8 weeks old. then he went on to say that i must have done something to provoke his dog then. I can't believe how increbidly stupid some people are. i told him he is paying for the bill and that i have contacted the news station which will be out here shortly. i think they own but didn't give out the insurances name. i will look into it. thank you so much for all the advice

I can't believe the nerve of these people. So now they are p-o'd about even paying the vet bill. (I'd do my best to make sure they pay more than that.) Make sure you point that out to the news reporter as well, that they just came over and insinuated it was somehow your pup's or your fault that their unleashed pit bull climbed a fence and killed Max. Call your councilman or mayor as well - or go speak at the next meeting. Give 'em hell.
