I recently had the chance to adopt a Rat Terrier. She was taken to a Vet Clinic to be "put to sleep" and the Vet refused and took her home instead. It was my good luck to be a friend of the Vet's family. They knew I was a dog lover and had lost my little girl Jack Russell a few months ago, so Amber came to live with me. She is 4 months old and a beautiful puppy. When she isn't bouncing off the walls, she is snuggling with me. LOL She is crate trained but not "house trained". That is a work in progress and any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I love all the pictures of everyones furry friends. I will try to get a picture of Amber posted, she is very pretty and colorful little girl. |

Why on earth would someone try to put a 4 month old puppy to sleep. I am so glad that your vet friend refused and took her in to find her a home. I guess the best advice I can give for potty training is be patient and invest in a good carpet cleaner. It too my Lucy a while before we were accident free. Welcome to the group. I can't wait to see pictures of this little lady. |

First of all,Welcome to our rattie family! .It's great that your vet friend refused to put her t sleep because although vets care about animals, there's not many that will refuse (that i know of anyways).as Colleen said, why would anyone want to put a 4 month old puppy to sleep?that just sickens me!.anyways post some pics when you get the chance |

| Hello there! I am also new to this site and was told it was a great site for Rat Terrier lovers! First thing congrats on getting a Rat Terrier, I have owned them for three years now and I couldn't imagine owning any other kind of dog. There loyalty and love and their personalities is just awsome! Potty training has been different for all three of mine. My girl (only girl) was the hardest to get potty trained. Don't know if anyone else has had more difficulties with girls or not but my boys have been easy! She took I believe a good six months! So be patient buy puppy pads and maybe even those diapers for puppies. Good Luck it will happen! |

| Yes, sometimes it does take a little longer to house train. Shadow was my first attempt at house training as the others came that way and was very easy. However, I got Shadow at 4 months and we started with the pads... he sometimes went on the pads and most of the time the carpet. (Nature's Miracle works wonderful). Just be patient with her but presistent too. Crate training works best for me because everytime the crate door opened I immediately took him outside and when the job was in the progress or just completed I'd praise him and reward him with a treat. This works. Now I give him a treat only when we come inside and he has done his business. He will sit by the door, I will take his collar and leash off and he sits till I give him a treat then he takes off running and is so very happy that he was a good boy. However, I must say that even though Shadow is house trained... I have to watch him all the time. So watch your little girl when she is outside of her crate and watch for signs and take her outside immediately and reward. Patience and time will work great rewards for both of you. Take care and welcome. |

Welcome! So glad the vet refused to euthanize and you got your new rattie! How horrible that someone would want to have a healthy puppy put to sleep. |

ACK! Must've missed this over the weekend. Welcome to you - so glad that the vet and you were able to save this little girl. GRRRR to her previous owner that would consider putting her to sleep. I hope you check back in, we'd love to see her and hear how she is adjusting and fitting in |
