I've had dogs all my life and love training them, and after four dogless years we're finally getting another one. I've always been surrounded by dogs, a side effect of working as a trainer at several large horse barns. Horsepeople and dogs go together like, well, kibbles and bits.

Anyway. ..

All of my other dogs have been either retrievers or shepherds, and I know rat terriers have a very different temprament.  I've lived with a few of them, but never actually trained one.

So, I'm curious as to whether anybody has found anything that is particularly helpful to them as terrier owners in specific. I know he is going to be different in tempriment to the dogs I'm used to, and I'd rather avoid any heartache if I possibly can by knowing what I should expect when I start to train him.

I know, thats horribly  vague.

Thanks to anybody with ideas,

First of all our moderator or trainer will respond to your post as well. But rat terriers are VERY smart and eager to please. However, you must remain consistent. They are very energetic at least mine is. As far as training, they are very easy to train. Shadow loves treats, so that is a good way to entice training. Lots of praise will work too. I can't stress consistency enough. However be warned that once you own a rattie, you will be hooked as they are the most loveable and adorable dogs that anyone can have. I've had other dogs myself, but this one is very special. Read the other posts here under training and you can find all the information you ever want to know. Everyone here is very friendly and eager to answer all questions. Just browse around you will find OUR fur babies are one of a kind. We LOVE our ratties.
