I am new to this site and a new mommy of a puppy.  We adopted Trixi from a shelter on Saturday June 30th and they said that she is a rat terrier and is about 7 months old.  I have tried going on "Pet Lover Forum" to ask questions and such, but they are judgemental and mean instead of providing support.  I was wondering if you guys think that my Trixi looks like a rat terrier.  She seems much skinnier than the "thick chested" pictures i have seen.  Any advice or opinion would be appreciated...I hope her picture shows up on this post!  Thanks!

Hi there! I was wondering when you were going to post LOL.

Welcome to you and Trix. There's no judging here, just rat terrier loving, good hearted people.
Can you post a pic of Trixi? So we can see what you're concerned about?

Yep. I can see it. Trixi looks like ratty too me and as for chests...Penny is about as dinky as a ratty can get. She's narrow and tiny and just really long and linky.
We almost named her Trixie too LOL.

She looks like a rat terrier to me too. How much does she weight?

I would have to agree, shes got the coloring. Once you get to know her personality that will help alot to ID her as one too.

well, unfortunately she had parvo when we got her...not to tell a sob story, beacuse I read your original posting nycmom and this is nothing compared to that ( sorry for your loss) but we diagnosed it as soon as she got home, took her to the vet and decided to treat her. She went into the vet h ospital on Monday morning and came home on Wednesday evening, perkier than ever! I am starting to see her real personality now that she is feeling well! She LOVES to be outside, but many times she just lays in the sun rather than wanting to walk or run anywhere. She is almost fully housebroken and has never had an accident anywhere other than her little training mats in front of the door. She likes to snuggle and also to play "biting" games. she growls at herself in the mirror and loves to eat! I am REALLY LOVING being her mommy...she is GREAT and full of life! She makes me happy to wake up in the morning! oh, by the way, she has already taken over our couch and bed! HAHA

Trixi is indeed a cutie!!  Ratties come in all shapes and sizes, as it was bred as a type for specific duties, brought over to the States from England and further cross-bred, but retain a certain temperment.   Classification with governing boards for breed recogniotion is fairly recent.  As a comparison, our Bailey will be small comparred to our neighbors 26# rattie.  Off the top off my head, ratties fall under three types:  Mini-13" and under, from the whithers(measured from where the neck meets the shoulders).  Standard- 13-19".  Deckers (Decker Giants) are 19"+ .

Best regards,

Michael

If she's 8 lbs at 7 months she probably wont get over 10 lbs. They get most of their height and weight by 6 months.

Trixie Definately looks like a Rattie to me.
Nibbler is a toy, and he weighs about 8 lbs as well. His chest is not as thick as standard ratties, but he will only be 10lbs at the most.
Perhaps you've got yourself a toy as well. Their bodies seem to be similar in build.

Hello- I read your story on the link, and God Bless you for saving that precious little thing. I am also fairly knew to the site, and everyone here has been amazing to me. While my story is not as scary as yours, we also adopted Sadie from a bad situation. To answer some of your questions. Everyone here has very different ideas about food. I personally feed Chicken Soup for the dog lovers soul food. Sadie gobbles it up. She gets walked twice a day, but they are both fairly short. She loves to throw raw hides around the house for more exercise. And she spends a GREAT deal of time sleeping. ( Actually as I type this, my fiancee is sleeping on my shoulder, and Sadie is in the next chair sleeping)
I agree that you will find great joy in being a mommy to your brand new furbaby. Sadie is my companion anywhere I go around the house, and I don't know what i'd do without her, and i've only had her for a couple weeks.

Bless you for doing what you did. Once you spend any time with these babies you are hooked. My Shadow is part Chihuahua... but he looks just like a rattie to me and the personality is so dead on. Welcome and stick around. Everyone here I found out to be very helpful and friendly. Very supportive too with quick answers. I'm learning too about my Shadow. He is 8 months now or almost 8 months. He is just finally housebroken.. Until I caught him in the act just a few minutes ago. That was the first time in 2 weeks.... I almost thought we had jumped that hurdle... but oh welll.... I'm a gonner... I am smitten. Your baby is soooooo cute.
