Wolf was my life-saver. When I lost Mack, Emily and my cat Rusty within five weeks, I was losing it big time. Our vet called two days after Mack left us (sounds odd because he's not really gone. He had a commanding presence that I still feel) to tell me she knew of a one year old german shepherd mix who needed a home. It was too soon but having to say no broke my heart the rest of the way. A few days later hubby came home and told me someone in the office he was working out of that week had a rat terrier litter. I read up on them and wasn't sure a ratty was the dog for us, but it was one of those any-port-in-a-storm things so I said yes. Then I found rat-terrier .com and began to really look forward to getting the pup.

The ride home from the "breader" almost had me changing my mind. All of the other pups in the litter were calm and quiet. Wolf was shaking and yipping. We decided to take him anyway because his mother had become violent toward him, and he was ostracized by the others and needed a loving home. The forty minute drive back to the house was agonizing as the puppy whimpered and yipped and cried until my son pointed out that the crying sounded like a good friend of our's laughing. He was right! So, the rest of the way home, it was hard to not giggle when the poor little guy cried.

When we got home, hubby and son let the puppy out of his crate. He stumbled around a little, peed on the floor and then trotted over to the cat's bed, much to the cat's dismay, and sacked out. It was so cute. It's been love ever since.

Wolf runs the other way when he sees me on this site. He's knows that after reading and ratties and telling you guys about him, he's going to get bunches of smooches and hugs.

my daughter wanted her own dog (she was 5 at the time) and REALLY wanted a chi - however with us having a english bulldog and lab i knew it would end up getting injured from being stepped on... but i decided to run over to plano shelter at lunch anyway to look at a chi listed on their website.  when i got there the dog did not have near the temperment we needed for our family so i started looking around... i'm not sure why but i went down the cat isle and there in the back on the bottom of the cage rack was talley!! he was sooo cute - i had never heard of a rat terrier but i loved his cow markings  and he was stocky yet small and had the curled up tail and pointy ears and a smile that looks like a grin.. he was soooo sweet and friendly.  i took him out to see him (and pointed out to the worker talleys collar was on soooo tight... he started to give me the speach about only getting a finger in between when he checked and realized YES it was VERY tight... and it was a cat collar... ).  his tail never stopped wagging the whole time and i was hesitant to leave him - but i had to go back to work so i filled out the paperwork, paid for him and went back to work.  after work i raced back to the shelter to get him then over to my daughters daycare and surprised her when she got in the car with a dog in her car seat :-)  Talley is probably the most challenging dog i have ever had but probably because i love him sooo much he knows he can get away with almost anything.  when  he is in trouble he will run up to me and stand on his tiny back legs and lay the side of his head on my shoulder....   everyone i know calls him "proud cut" - he is determined to be TOP DOG despite his small size.  someone lost a great dog but he could not be with a family who loves him more now....

Colleen, does she think of Lucy as her granddog? My mom thinks of Bob that way.

Oh definitely. She sees all the dogs that way, except her own of course that is her child. They get birthday and christmas presents from her.

That sounds like my mom.  I was talking to her on the phone once and she said "do you know what your brother did yesterday?"  Well, I only have one sister...no brothers.  I thought she was losing it there for a minute until she started telling me about something her dog, Casper, did.

My son got one that someone didn't have time for. I thought that was the cutest thing I had ever seen. I tried to get him to give it to me, but daughter in law wouldn't hear of it.
So, lo and behold, on my birthday, my granddaughter appeared with Maggie. Now she is the light of our lives. We love her very much.
I have tried to upload an avatar, but have flat failed. But she lookes very much like the one PamWh has, same markings, same sweet face with tri colors.

I have really enjoyed reading these stories! I think ratties are a blessing to every family! I had talked with Steve for a while about getting a dog. I first wanted an English Bulldog, but after lots of research about the breed and looking at $$$$$, temperment, and life span I scrapped that idea. Next choice for me was a mini dachund and Steve wanted a JRT (go figure!) My parents had a rattie and was a good dog...smart, not too hyper, etc. and seemed a good compromise. So a rattie it was! When we went to see the litter with Dottie we fell in love!!! We had to wait 4 weeks before we could bring her home and she is the best fur baby we could ever have! She is the sweetest and smartest dog I have ever known! I have had many breeds over the years and ratties are the best by far!!  RATTIES RULE!!!

Actually, I didn't choose a ratty.....he chose me!

It all began about 4 years....when I applied for a golden retriever mix at the animal shelter, I was denied and so I picked up a local newspaper and found an ad for a rat terrier litter. I called the lady, got directions and went to her place to look at them. It was love at first sight! A little boy came wombling up to me, wagging his stubby tail( natural bob) and I paid for him on the spot and took him home. Bubba led to Bandit which led to Bambi which led to Bali, which led to Ravyn( so far they have been all males)and finally I am waiting for my female pup to be ready( breeder don't sell until they are a good 12 wks). Of them all I have Bali and Ravyn as of Bubba and Bandit were stolen and never recovered, and Bambi fell in love with a little Mini of a friend and so I gave him to her and now they live happily ever after(spayed and neutered of course! Teresa don't want no pups from them).

Anyway, my boys and I are waiting for our little female to arrive.

My daughter and I were looking to get a dog and i talked to a friend that has six dogs!! And has many other pets as well. I thought she would be good on helping us pick a breed. We had to have a small dog due to being in an apartment. And i wanted one that didn't require lots of grooming. She suggested rat terriers. She told me how smart and loyal this breed was. Said her sitter had one and it was such a great dog with kids. So i started searching on petfinder and found our little Izzy there. We adopted her the day we meet her. I was going to wait and have her spayed there but i couldn't do i had to bring her home with me that day! And we have been a happy little family since then.

Ah yes - Jack Russells..... We had one about 20 years ago. Tragic story as we only had her for a little over a year. Someone poisoned her. We had the neighbors from hell next door which was the reason the previous owner of our house moved (we didn't find that out till later). Anyway, we loved the size and spirit of her but will admit - the hyperactivity was trying. Frazer made the Jack's famous and I tend to believe that with this new popularity - over breeding took place. As people who show dogs will tell you that sometimes the worst thing that can happen to a bred is winning best in show at Westminster. All the worst in breeding ensues.

As I have told you all, we adopted "Smokey" a wonderful little guy! When we first say him, I went home and did some online research and found this site. I found all I needed to know about this bred and the next day we took our other dog to meet him. Love at first site. They get along great! He has all the characteristics of the Jacks but, as I have read - "an off switch" He is a 17 pound dynamo who stands his ground with his 60 pound big brother (although Smokey doesn't know he is the 'little brother')

We could not be happier with this little guy. In fact the other night I mentioned to my wife that being he is so small maybe we should get another one! If looks could kill!! LOL. Again, this site has all the info and a group of people who will always be there to help with any questions.

Actually I have always been a cat person myself. Both of my beloved feline companions of 18 years died. Right before the last one died I rat sitted for my son and fell in love with his dog and he gave her to me- my beloved Bo Girl. She was such a sweetheart and I loved her so much.

After she got ill and died suddenly I was so very loney for her, that I started looking for another rattie and found my three girls by answering an ad in the paper. As you know I could not keep Sally (the wild girl-my son has her), but I have my girls Patty (La Bella) and Franny (the Frenchie).

Next, time I get another dog, I am going to get a puppy

He had a older cockapoo and my husband wanted a JRT so we went through a breeder and purchased Sydney.  Copper or cockapoo past awawy this last march and Sydney became lonely as were we.  We decided we did not want to start with another puppy and decided to adopt.  We then had to decide on a type.  I did not want another JRT (though I love Sydney todeath) but we wanted a dog to keep up with Sydney so we decided on a rat.  We then wanted a rat that was around her age. We saw Sonic on ppetfinder and drove from our place by hudson wisconsin to owatonna ,minnesota to visit with him.  Sydney and Sonic hit it right off from the start and we took him home that night with us.

I wanted a mini-RT ever since I was in colleg eand my lab partner had one... I would go to her house to study and party and this dog was what my hubby called a mini-mountain goat.... he would climb all over the back of the couch...... and like stand there like he owned the place... I was just enamored with them... when we moved to Idaho in 2001 we looked into getting a dog and ended up getting  GSP (german shorthaired Pointer) then a chocolate lab... and then we founf Duke out 110 LB yellow lab. so after we had to put out choc lab down we decided to not get any more dogs...... any way I was searching online for  pets on craigslist.org and ran accross a RT free to a good home... well by the time I have got to call the fella he was gone... so I said blah I just found a breeder on puppyfinder.com and picked out a boy I liked.....

Why we chose a ratty is the million dollar question around our house. We didn't really choose Sadie... she chose us. My fiancee and I decided to get a dog. He wanted a lab or border collie. I wanted a fox terrier. We decided a better idea would be to adopt. Plus we needed something small to accommodate our current living situation. The first night we started looking, Sadie found us. A woman who rescues dogs gave a man our number. His girlfriend was looking to get rid of Sadie. He simply gave her to us. She's been such a blessing to our house. Not overly active, but yet a lot of fun. She just lights up my day.

When we lost our male dobie last August, we knew right away that we'd want to get another dog, just not as big, in the spring. The idea was that we would take our time to find just the right breed. In the meantime, one of our other dogs became sick and died in January. A few weeks after our second one died, I was looking online at petfinder, and local shelters. I came across the breed rat terrier, wondered what that was, did more searching, and realized that the dog we had just lost must have been part rattie. He was such a great dog, and I wanted another similar to him. I found this site and in the breeding section, found a link to a breeders website. It was an old post, from last November, but looked anyways. They had pups available at the moment, ready to go to their new homes. A few days later we were driving up to Oregon from Ca to get one. We couldn't beilieve we were doing this...so out of character for any of us. I was torn between 2 dogs on the website, but had decided on the tri female (Molly)...loved the looks of them both, though. As we were walking out the door, we really didn't want to leave Lucy, and decided to get her too. So we got both girls that I was torn over. I'm soo glad I did. I love them both, and couldn't imagine not having them both.

First off, I describe myself as a dog lover. I just couldnt have dogs in my life again until now. I grew up with many dogs, often 3-4 at a time. Finally, I found myself in a postion where i could afford a dog. So I started planting the seed. Keith had never had a dog before and didnt really want one either. He said that our two cats were way too much for him, seeing that he never had a pet growing up. Well anyway, a trip to my parents house last October opened the door. He met Tuula, my parents husky mix. I hadnt seen her in years and she was all grown up now. I was surprised that she still remembered me from her puppy days. Eventually, Keith said that he wouldnt mind having a dog after all and so we started looking online for a rescue. After looking for many weeks and being turned down many times, I had pretty much given up. There was no way that we would be able to have a dog now. Too many places required houses. Living in an apartment was a flag that you wouldnt be a good parent somehow. Our complex even has a large fenced in dog run! Anyway, Keith found Topper's picture online at petfinder. It was a poor pic of him and at that time i wasnt interested, knowing that we would be rejected again. But at Keiths encouragement, we went to see him anyway. It was love at first sight and we snatched him up right away. We were really lucky to find our baby, and better yet they didnt discriminate against apartment dwellers!

Sorry to change subject, but I just wanted to comment to Kristen that I feel it's sad that some rescues are so particular that they do pass by really good homes because of living in an apartment, working full time, etc. One of my co-workers at the shelter I work at was turned down by the Humane Society for working full time (I mean, most of us do, right?) and ended up getting her dog from a backyard breeder (not a reputable breeder like those on here). While they need homes, too, I was dissapointed that she was turned down, someone who loves animals so much she volunteers her time to help them and is a great dog mom. Not all are like that, of course, and I understand why they are so picky as they're in the frontline of people NOT being good owners, but sometimes it really should be judged on a case by case basis.

Anyway, congrats on your rattie!

I fell into the breed like many of you as well. I decided that I really wanted a pet, so I had been looking at shelter websites for a few months. No shelters would adopt to me because I lived in an apt, and I was a college student. So, I started looking in the paper. One day I found an ad for Rat terrier/Pomeranian mixes. I called because growing up I thought poms were just the cutest little things, but my dad didn't want one. I asked a bunch of questions about the mother and father, and how big the pups would get. The man told me 15lbs. Well, that was about what I was looking for, so we decided to take the 1.5 hour trip to "just look." So we drive out there and realize that the people were from amish country. Anyway, the man didn't want to give me "the little male" because he broke his leg when he was about 4 weeks old. I really really wanted a boy for some reason, so I convinced him to let me see him. The little male was so freaking adorable and walking fine so I had to take him. He wanted to come home so bad too. His mom was a rat terrier (a large one) and his dad was a pom. I then came to this website and started learning about the terrier half of amlet. We had to treat Amlet for mange for almost six months, and I believe it was due to improper breeding. I'm so happy I got him. I don't know what would have happened to my poor baby out there with his mange.
Fast forward a year, we decided again to get another dog. I knew I wanted something at least half rattie. I was lucky enough to stumble on an ad for some Toys. Gosh, pumpkin is such a doll. I don't think i'll ever not have a rattie.

I had been breeding Boston terriers for about 20 years and was ready to give them up. I love them but they are so hard to breed, have so many medical problems, and showing was a nightmare. We tried mini-aussies, loved the smarts, hated the hair. We still have one too. In the mean time we ended up with a Border Collie to work the sheep, I can't run anymore, she is a wonderful dog but as a pup she almost killed me! She was always into everything and chewed and chewed and dug and had to have so much training as she was really hyper! They are not a dog to get unless you need them and I did and I have been so grateful to old Ginger for all the work she has saved me over the years, but I don't want to do that again!!!!
My husband and I talked and we decieded we wanted small dogs that were smart like the aussies and border collie but SHORT HAIRED! I had a wire haired dauchsund when I was young and hated that hair too. We discussed have hairless dogs. I checked all the hairless breeds out WOW What a learning experiance that was!! I found out that most hairless dogs have more medical problems than Bostons do. Then..... I discovered the HAIRLESS RAT TERRIER. No medical problems to speak of, long lived, healthy and cute. From there I discovered the regular Rat Terriers and we decieded to get one for my daughter. We found a puppy mill but did not know it just then and bought Mysty. Then I wanted one for me and I found a great breeder about an hour and a half away. She had an older pup that she had kept for herself but had decieded that she had too much of her line already. That was Maggie and I was totally HOOKED on Ratties. I wish that I had found them years ago!!

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Susan, I used to have a thing for big, long haired dogs. Then after a few rescues, I discovered that long hair, requires a lot, I mean a LOT of maintenance.

Like you, I also wanted a dog with some smarts...and dare I say it, I was drawn to the rat terrier for the reason it got its name...it can keep pests at bay. I had rare breed cats (bobtails), but was growing weary of their persnicky nature - pet me, not now, later, faster, slower, you're looooking at me LOL. I've sooo hooked on ratties now.

Well Izzy was at the Humane Society that I work at, and he was there for a month+ without anyone being interested in him because he had 'food aggression'. Well I could tell he was getting a little stressed and kennel crazy so i decided, 'hey i'll bring him home and give him some extra lovin that he needs' (even though I wasn't allowed pets in my old apt) But as soon as I brought him home his personality came right out and was a totally different dog than at the shelter. My boyfriend and I just fell in love with him and couldn't live with ourselves if we brought him back. lol So he is now my pride and joy I am SO very glad I decided that day to take him home.

HaHaHa! I didn't chose a rattie! She was a 'gift'!!!!

Since I had to put my chow down in December of 2004, (he had cancer and wasn't doing well), I had been thinking about getting another dog, a small one this time. I still had my lab, Immi G. I was considering a JRT. My neighbor had one, and he is just adorable. Any way, I  was in no hurry, and figured I would do a rescue from the Humane Society or ASPCA. Spring and summer came and went, still thinking about a new dog, but liking having only the one, she was happy too. Up to that point she had never been an only dog. Immi G. was loving the extra attention. After Hurricane Katrina, I kept hearing about all of these dogs that needed temporary homes til their owners could claim them. I knew I couldn't really do this. So I was going to wait til Christmas, thinking that if by then the dogs owners hadn't claimed them, the probably wouldn't.

Well, before that happened I got a call from my sister, asking me to meet her outside! ( yes, this usually means something needs to be fed or taken care of!) I went out, and here she comes with the cutest little flop eared dog hanging out the window! She says, 'here, you've been wanting a small dog!" She had found her wandering around the little store up the road, and asked around. People said she had been running loose for the last week or so. No one knew who she belonged to. I took her to the groomer, she stank, and asked them to take her to the vet next door to be scanned. NO chip! I put up fliers, and     an ad in the papers. I couldn't believe no one was missing this little girl!!!

She stole my heart the very first day I had her, so I was secretly hoping I wouldn't find her previous owner. No one ever claimed her. She is the light of my life, and I can't imagine not having her with me. I will have other ratties in the future. These little pups are just the best!!!

So, no, I didn't chose a rattie, I am sooo glad one was sent to me!!!!

I always wanted a JRT and a lady came into my store one day and said she was getting ready to have JRT RT mix puppies did I want one. I said yes before I realized that I had no where to keep her. I lived with my mom and she couldn't have pets. So I conned my best friend Nick into letting me keep her at his house til we got a house of our own. I stayed overe there more times than none anyways. Well I named her Josie and she wasn't ever trained properly so one night I went out of town and Nick let the dogs out to potty. Josie spotted a bird and off she went. She got hit by a car and broke her leg for the first time. They pinned it and it healed and 2 days after the pins came out she broke it again in the backyard. So they pinned it on the outside (yuck!) And one night she pulled one of the pins out. So we had to amputate the leg (back leg). It didn't slow her down though. When I left to go into the AF I left her with my mom. Boy did she love living with Granny. They live out in the country so it's pretty safe for her to run around. But her stubborness led to her demise and she was killed while I was on 30 days leave from England. At least I got to see her and be with her again. I carried her picture in my hat all through Basic Training. She was the greatest.
Well now I live with my husband in Fayetteville, NC and I got a cat before he moved back to the US. When he got back we were going on our 2 year Anniversary. I wanted another dog but wasn't sure if I was ready. Well I did the "let's see whats out there" and found a lady not far from us that had a litter that was just at 9 weeks. we went out there and she only had 2 left, a boy and a girl. The boy wouldn't come out of the dog house but we could see Maggie from the drive way sitting up against the fence watching the world go by. From the minute we walked in she was all over us. She was in my arms and climbed up on my shoulder and then down my back. I was standing there bent over with this little thing standing on my back!!!! My husband picked her up and that's all she wrote. They have to be the cutest puppies of all the dogs!!!! when we move somewhere bigger we will get more....my husband doesn't know that but that's ok! I will always have Ratties in my house!!!

I got Cleo by accident really, I think it was fate really though. I live with my mom and grandparents, more because its a good idea then I have to. My grandparents had a beloved shih tzu who was about 13 years old named Zeke, well he was living his last days with us, blind deaf and just plain old, but a happy boy, and the neighbor... well the neighbor didnt see him under the truck.  My grandparents were beside themselves I don't think I have taken anything out of the house quicker, all his toys bedding etc had to be out of the house. My grandma wanted a new dog, a younger dog, so we began to look, and we looked for about a month or so maybe two... my mom came across a ad online for a newspaper of a RT litter and it was somewhat in my grandma's price range, I called talked to the breeder knowing NOTHING about RT's, I told my grandma and we went to look at her the next day, about 2 hour drive away or so. The breeder didn't think Cleo would be over 10 lbs. prefect for my gma, well we had our choice, Cleo or her brother who was a lil bigger then my Cleo who at the time tipped the scales at just over 6 lbs in 9-10 weeks old. My grandma named her Cleopatra or Cleo for short, because she was a Queen like Cleoparta was. My grandma picked Cleo and we took her home, my Grandma held her the whole way. She wanted Cleo to bond with her.  I played with Cleo, but my grandma held her all the time. At night my grandma was custom to having a dog sleep at the foot of the bed, well Cleo would wiggle too much and want to snuggle and so my grandma would bring her in my room in the middle of the night  plus she was afraid of rolling over on her and say you try and sleep with her. We tried her sleepin in the grandparents room for about a week, then she just slept with me all the time and 90% of the time under the covers lol. Plus she was a lil too active for my grandparents liking. They were used to a older calmer Shih tizu. Xmas came closer  when it did my uncle had gotten my grandma a 5 year old rescued Shih tzu, named Sissy ( short for Contessa) which would have been nice had he told me before because I would have liked to prepare my dog. (back on subject)

My grandparents offically gave me Cleo for Xmas, she has always been my dog though. She will be a year old in August and is a lil princess lol so her name fits her well. She weighs about 12-14 lbs now.

WE now have another Shihtzu mix also a rescue, who is about 7 months old named  Tori  ( short for Victoria, think my grandma has something for roalty) and Cleo play all the time. If only I could get them to listen and come back when I call them.

Thats how I got my girl, didnt know anything about RT's and really could find out much about them, I did find one book which I bought the same day. There aren't many in my area, although the groomers in my area know the breed. Which is nice I have one lady who trims Cleo's nails about once a month, I am too scared to do it myself and she moves too much, plus the lady clips and files them with a dremmel for $10.

She is very much my dog and acts alot like me. lol I don't think I could have picked a better dog if I had tried, she is wonderful!
