I'm just curious how everyone here learned about rattys and what was the deciding factor?

My story is...I had always been partial to really large dogs, or really small dogs (ok...and dogs in between) LOL. When I our son turned 1 and started walking, he started to take an interest in our two very large dogs (90# each), so we decided that we should look for a very small, low maintenance, good all around dog.

A friend recommended a ratty and told me about the two types. I was really impressed by how they earned their name and did all sorts of research.  Before the week was up, we had our puppy picked out. It's been Ratty-love since *sigh*

Hubby's grandma had ratties, so he was familiar with the breed and thought they were funny little dogs. I had an aunt and an uncle who each had ratties when I was a kid and I remembered them as great little dogs. Plus, I wanted an inside dog this time and one that had short hair and didn't have to go to the groomer's. We saw an ad in the paper for rattie puppies (a litter of 4 boys), went to look at them, and our sons picked out Bob. They zeroed in on him right away and weren't really interested in looking at the other puppies. They named him Bob right away too, because he just looked like a Bob.

Apollo was my first rattie. He was a an early Christmas present from my fiance'. I got him in November because Brad was afraid if he didn't go ahead and get him, Apollo would be gone. But when the time came and Brad said I could get another doggie, he asked "What kind do you want?" I said "Duh, another Rattie... of course!"

I just love how smart they are. They have the most precious faces. I love how they are smaller dogs but have such ratitude! Hehehehehe! They are very loyal and are always eager to please. Easy to care for as far as coat goes. There are soooo many things that I LOVE about my two ratties and all ratties in general. There is just that "something" about them. One thing inparticular though is how this breed is not as cookie cutter as other breeds. They have soooo many sizes, colors, markings. My two are completely different in size and color. They are like snowflakes... no two are the same. I think that's what makes this breed amazing.

I had never seen or heard of ratties until about 2 years ago when my husband's new boss moved here from Illinois. He had one named Katie. When we would visit, Katie would just love all over me (and I her) and his boss kept ribbing him that hubby should get me one. But we kept saying "No, we don't need another dog". We have an older large mixed breed dog that was taken in by us when she was abandoned by renters in our neighborhood and she isn't exactly dog-friendly.

So anyway, one day he was talking to his friend who had bred Katie's parents and he was breeding them one last time and so Rodney (hubby's boss) talked my hubby into getting one for me. This man breeds ratties rarely and works sort of on the "barter system" for those who request a pup. They live in a real farming area - nothing but fields for miles and miles, so the ratties there are still used as "working" dogs for vermin control, hunting, etc. So for a case of a local beer that's hard to get in rural Illinois and a local Pittsburgh Harley-Davidson shop t-shirt, I got my Darlin' Daisy I take nothing away from all the dogs I've ever met or had, but there's something special 'bout my Daisy and I love her more every day.

The situation worked out well with Anna, I think mostly because Daisy was a new baby when she came into our home at 8 weeks of age, and was so tiny that Anna didn't of course see her as a threat.

I named her Daisy for a couple of reasons: 1. It's my favorite flower and 2. I'm hoping one day to get a couple of more (males) and name them Bo and Luke

We had a friend (an older gentleman) that raised Rat terriers, but loved each and every one of them SO MUCH that he could never part with any of them, and he ended up having about 20 of them on his farm.  We thought they were the funniest and smartest little dogs!  I've always had Doberman Pinschers, but have little dogs, too.  Two years ago, right before my wife's birthday, she drove past a house here in town that had a sign in the yard 'Rat Terrier Puppies for sale'---the man only had 2 left-- a male and a female, and Barb wanted this little female puppy SO BAD for her birthday.  My married daughter's birthday was close to the same time, so we bought both ratties, kept the female (Lucy) and gave my daughter the male (Piston).  They still get to visit with each other a lot.  And my Dobie, Darmok,  thought we had given her the best thing in the world----a little sister!

I knew I wanted to adopt a small dog, and fiance and I both had to agree... He did not want a "frou frou" dog (I couldn't talk him into a shih-tzu) and his breed of choice was a JRT or a Beagle, both breeds with some VERY undesirable traits for our living situation.

I looked for several months on petfinder and honestly, kept overlooking Yogi (they had a bad photo of him up) but one day I clicked on his profile and it was just love, fiance had his reservations at first because of his age (8) but I basically bugged him to death until he gave in. Well, and Bonnie did, too. Our favorite bartender at our favorite little pub. I told her how fiance was dragging his feet and she told him he better let me have Yogi or he was 86'd! So the next day I called, talked to the rescue lady and a week later we drove up and got him. His "Gotcha Day" was St. Patty's Day of this year and I know my next dog will be another rescued rattie.

It was basically the same for me and Nibbler. Adam really wanted a JRT, but he wouldn't work out since we both work and live in an apartment. (well worked till i got canned for the second time) I was looking at the newpaper ads online, and although we wanted a free puppy or something, i clicked on rat terrier becase I didn't know what they were, and I saw m y little Nibs!
I called the breeder and asked about the dog witht he white nose and he said that he was still available. I bugged Adam and started an argument, but I still got my way and we drove out there that night "Just to Look" and he ended up going to the ATM and getting the dog for me!
He calls Nibbler his walking $500.00 (200 for the dog 300 apt pet deposit), and he wanted a girl, but Nibs is a boy... and he griped and complained and threatened to hate the dog... but nope, nibbler and he are best friends. Nibbler even sleeps with him rather than me now!

My hubby wanted a JRT but I did NOT want that energy and hyperness. After looking and looking I came across a breeder in the area withe rat terriers. Never heard of them before, but after researching the breed and monitoring her site, I saw Jack and just knew he was it. We couldn't have made a better choice! Now to keep an eye out for another!

When Rick and I married (1983) and I came into the family my father-in-law was adopted by a stray rattie and Gail (F-I-L) named him Jack. Jack was so loyal....he would sit on the chair of the riding lawnmower that sat directly in front of my father-in-law's bedroom window. Jack would sleep there at night and not leave until Gail would wake up. I remember how ferocious Jack would get around a bigger dog defending his family. Yes, twice he made vet trips to sew up his wounds. He was a great family dog but was my F-I-L's true companion. Sadly, he disappeared one summer day and we never saw him again.

Rick and I decided that we wanted a smaller dog after our daughter gave him a lab cross his first Father's Day. Booger, our lab, was a great dog and a good family pet. But after he died (he was 9) we decided to get a smaller dog and we decided to get a "Jack" dog. I started reading the classified ads in the newspaper and one day they advertised Rat Terriers. We bought Snort, our male rattie who lived to be 12 and died this past March of diabetes. Because I wanted a dog of my own....Snort was all Rick's dog (he would tolerate me but the love of his life was his Daddy, Rick). I went looking for a dog that would be small, would want to be held and loved me. It was then that we bought Lucy, our female Toy Fox Terrier, into our home. Yes, she was the perfect dog I longed for and she is such a sweet angel.

When Snort died in March we were devastated. Everyone where we looked or any situation that came up, we would say, "Remember when Snort would...." Even Lucy was lost. I came upon an ad in the paper advertising Rat Terriers and I called. Then I called my daughter and talked with her about it and she was very enthusiastic. She said it was time to get another "Snort" dog. When we went to get the little female Rat Terrier, I got so emotional, I started crying. Both my daughter and the lady that was selling the puppies were confused. I tried to make them understand that this was extremely hard for me because I felt like I was betraying Snort. We missed him so much and it was hard to think about getting a new dog.

To make a long story short, we came home with the sweetest little furball. That precious puppy is so energetic and funny and witty and stubborn and curious and mischieveous and a wonderful addition to our family. Lucy is even beginning to warm up to her....well maybe just a little. This is how we acquired Ms. Bizzy Bailey and why we love ratties.

It was an accident for me.  In fall of 2004 my friend (who owns the stable where I keep my horse) found a tiny puppy wandering down a road.  She stopped and the pup ran to her.  The puppy was tiny, had worms and fleas, was dehydrated and starving.  She also had horrible scars on her head and eye, which was blind and protruding.  My friend took her home and cleaned her up, fed her, etc.  Two days later I went out to ride my horse and saw this little pup chasing a huge chicken. I scooped her up and she gave me kisses...Deb asked if I wanted her because she already had several dogs and Mitzy wasn't safe running around the horses.  Without even stopping to think I said "yes".  We thought she was a JRT mixed with Chi...we'd never heard of rat terriers.

A co-worker clued me into rat terriers and showed me pics.  I found this website and posted pics of Mitzy and asked opinions.  Also, by everyone's description of their rattie's personality I could tell she was much like that.  I had always had big dogs before but I loved this little girl the second I saw saw her with Deb.

In fact, I love her so much I decided to get another....so the next spring we found a breeder and got Mayfly!

PS: for all the newbies, Mitzy does have only 1 eye.  The injured eye had to be removed when she was spayed.  She does just fine with only 1 though!  And yes, our newest addition Skipper also has one eye....he lost it in a fight with another dog before landing at a shelter.

We had a shih tzu, Elvis, for almost 14 years before he died last May. I was devastated--I felt like he was the last living link to my grandmother (other than human family. I was the only person in the family to have gotten one of the puupies from her 2 shih tzus.) I knew I wanted another puppy, and I really wanted another shih tzu, but John wouldn't go for anything that required lots of grooming. This time I wanted an inside dog. Elvis HATED being inside!!

I didn't think I'd want to seriously look for a puppy until this summer, though. A few days after Elvis died, I started looking in the paper and online "just to see." We'd already talked about different breeds for when Elvis was gone (he'd been diagnosed with HW about 4 years earlier.) At first, John wanted a JRT because he LOVED Eddie on -- oh darn, what was that show? Anyway, my dad discouraged that because of the hyperness. Then we thought about a Boston Terrier, and that's what we'd pretty much decided on.

We were out riding one day and he pointed out a sign he'd noticed on his way to work. They had RT puppies for sale. I told him I didn't want one of "those" dogs. We'd had a fiest when I was younger, but I don't really remember much about it since it was just an "ole yard dog." John's brother had a RT mix, and he would DRIVE ME CRAZY bouncing all over the place, in my face, etc, so that was my only REAL experience with the breed. Anyway, the next day was Father's Day, and our younger daughter and I took John to eat at a local spot. There was a sign on the window for RT puppies (same place John had pointed out the day before), and I saw how cute the pictures were, so I called. Just to look, of course. We ended up getting Bama that day, and Jessi and I went to Petco as soon as we got Bama and John home. I spent more at Petco than I did for Bama!

Frasier, LOVE that show and that's why they became so popular all of a sudden, and is why my fiance wanted one... I researched the breed and decided they weren't for us and our neighbor has one, very hyper little thing always barking his head off. I love them, though, but not right now for us! Maybe if we lived out in the country with fenced off acreage but then I'd just want many more ratties!

I'd never heard of RT's either.... untill about 5 years ago.
I have a friend in Anderson Indiana that is an Elvis impersonator and he had a male and female type B Rattie..
they had puppies and when he had one left he asked me if i wanted him.. So i drove up to Anderson to see him.. and fell in love instantly.. He looked just like Sassy cept his tail wasn't docked. and he was the shortest, cutest dog ever...
I named him Elvis.. he was the coolest dog I'd ever met... he would grin all the time, loved to go to fast food resturant drive thru's cos he knew he was getting something....
I lost him at the age of 9 months to parvo.. and I was devastated.....

Then a year ago, a man I work with told me he raised Ratties..
I got Sassy... she has been a huge joy in my life..
Then 2 months ago I bought my first home and we have this wonderful fenced yard..
Since I work so many hours I opted to adopt instead of raising another puppy. Plus I wanted Sassy to have company while I was at work....
And we got Punkin, she has also added joy to my life...
It was testy at first because Sassy has always been the Queen around here.. But after a month and a half the girls are fine..

There is just something about this breed of dog that gets hold of your heart and won't let go...

My getting Caesar was fate~~ we had lost our dachshund April of '05. That was the hardest time for us... ( she was given to us by friends  in the Air Force that were moving away and could only take 2 dogs with them, they had 3. He didn't want to give up his hunting dog & she had a poodle that was hers for 8 years, so we got Reba who was 2 yrs.)  After she went ot doggie heaven we knew we needed another dog in our family but werer taking time to find the right one...2 months later we went looking at dogs at our shelter but with no luck!! It was a first come first serve. We picked out 3 dogs to look at but by the time it was our turn they were already being adopted. The last one being a Rattie. I knew nothing about them just thought she was adorable...however the other family took her. We couldn't look at any other dogs there because they had notes by them saying "no children under 10 yrs." My youngest daughter at that time was 8 yrs. old. So after being there over 2 hours we left with No dog to love. The children were pretty upset, so we went to one more place called Tullys Kennels. They had so many puppies there, (they all seemed to be well cared for) we walked in and there he was, all by himself in a cage. I asked if we could see him and we never let him go!!  Caesar came into our lives June 9th 2005.

So of course when my husband said we could get Caesar a sister I had to have another Rattie!! We went back to Tullys Kennels and knew she was the one for us. Julia's "Gotcha day" is April 7 2007. Since getting Caesar and Julia I've looked up everything I could find out about Ratties and was so happy to have found this site. I've learned so much about their breed and fell in love not only with my babies but all ratties!!

Ever since my husband and I married we have had dogs.  Always large dogs..except for one Springer Spaniel..who was dropped off and I got hubby to let me keep her.  We have had Saints, Newfs, Old English, etc.

My husband has had Parkinson's for 24 years and he has a wonderful Lab service dog Reggie.  We have also our second rescue OE Barkley.

We feed the birds and have a rodent problem.  We also live on a farm that has been in my husbands family since 1855.  So with the barns and fields there are a lot of vermin around here.  I was doing some looking on the internet and saw that Rat Terriers were good dogs to have for that problem. Hubby finally agreed...he always told me "no little dogs".  Anyway I looked and then my hubby took a bad fall down our cellar stair and fractured his neck.  He was in the hospital for a month...

So to make a long story short...my son farms the land now...no more cows.  He has some friends that they help each other and one brought his dog with him.  He said she was about ready to have pups and they were Ratties.  She fell into my lap. He was giving them away.  She was born last July 18 and we got her just before she turned 5 weeks old.  Eventually I want another one!!!

Our family had decided to get a dog nearly three years ago.
We wanted a small-ish dog, because we wanted it to be an indoor dog, part of the family, but not a teensy dog because our three sons are kind of rambunctious (and no frou-frou dogs-, but a female dog as I live with 4 men!)
I also wanted a short haired dog, easy to groom.
We saw an adoreable puppy one day in a car at a store and it turned out to be a Beagle/Tick Hound mix, but there were no more available.
We looked in ads and found one for "RCA puppies", which right off the bat I knew what that looked like, though I'd never heard specifically of "Rat Terriers". I called and talked to the breeder for a LONG time, I did some internet research. We decided this was the kind of dog for us. The breeder had one female and we went to visit (100 mile trip one way!) and fell in love. We put down a deposit then and there (she was only 5 wks. old then) and we came back to visit two weeks later because we missed her. About 10 days after that we brought her home.
No regrets, Dilly is the best dog ever!

I didn't choose a rat terrier... the rat terrier chose me! We inherited him from a neighbor about a mile away who couldn't keep him at home. We kept returning him to his family... he kept coming back.. so after several such instances, the owner gave him to us. Said we had "ruined" him so we might as well take him. He's been such a blessing... and fit in well with our other three dogs.

I didn't choose a rat terrier really either. I was out picking up job applications two summers ago and stopped in the local petstore to get an application. Well, after grabbing it I wondered back because I noticed they had puppies. And there was Lucy, so cute and tiny. I petted her, she bit my hand, and I was in love. I left the store and called my mom on the way back to my house. Told her about the puppy and of course she was no pleased that I really wanted to get a dog. She didn't know if I would be able to care for a dog properly, aka spoil her to the extreme. I stopped by a friends house where we did some research on the breed to see if she could be a match, and all I found was good information about the breed even the negatives were not bad. So I called my mom and asked if it would be already, she said alright and hung up on me. I called to store to see if she was still there and asked them to not sale her until I got there. When I got to the store I talked with the owner to see where this pup came from and make sure that she was not from a puppy mill. He assured me that they hand select their breeders to ensure proper breeding. I stocked up on all the good stuff and we were on our way home. Of course my mother's upsettedness did not last long at all. I called her when I got home and she was all excited and came to meet Lucy the next day. She was only mad for minutes but has told me that she is really happy that I got Lucy and couldn't imagine me without her. I think so too.
