Hello to everyone:

Abbysmom’s story inspired me to ask a similar question. Do you think Lady (aka Ladybug aka Her Ladyship) is a rat terrier?

My partner and I adopted Lady from the Williamson County (Texas) Humane Society about five years ago. The shelter, which described her as a “Chihuahua mix,” had no information about her past, as Lady came to it as a lost dog picked up by Animal Control. No one ever came to claim her.

The vet estimated she was about two to two-and-half years old at the time, so Lady is about seven and a half years old now. The vet’s tech commented that Lady looked like a rat terrier, and of course, I immediately went on line to find out about the breed. To me, she surely looks like a rat terrier, although her tail is undocked and her coat color is not as common (Lady is sort of reddish-brown with a white blaze on her chest and white-tipped toes). Her body shape, expression, and behavior are what really make me think she could be a rat terrier. She’s extremely intelligent, vocal (lots of editorial comment in the form of mumbles and grumbles), loves to burrow under the covers, and despite her love of comfort, is always game to go (“Where ever you’re going, Mom, I’m going with you!&rdquo.  To give you an idea of her size, she is 12 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 15-16 pounds.

In the end, her breed origins don’t matter, because she’s a great dog, but still, I am curious what you rat terrier experts think. I’d appreciate your feedback.

Cordially, Ladysmom

Thanks for the warm welcome!  Glad you like the pictures -- she is awfully cute, if I do say so myself.  It was love at first sight when I saw her at the shelter.

She definitely isn't pure chi - she looks more rattie. She's very cute!
It's kind of like my Mitzy, she was a rescue, and I don't know if she's pure rattie or rat-chi mix.

Given our lack of knowledge about her origins, we'll never know for sure.  I'll happily settle for rattie-mix (that way she gets points for hybrid vigor).     And, we get to play off "rat terrier" with expressions like "brat terrier" when she's being a diva.

Just want to add my "WELCOME" too. Ratties have very distinct personalities and what I am finding out are very, very smart. My baby is part Chi too... but is definately a rattie to me because of his length, markings and sheer charm. I am here cause everyone tells me he looks like a rattie and I claim that cause his rattie part of the mix is more dominant....PLUS this is such great group of friends here. You're gonna love it here.

She sort of reminds me of Amlet - Rattie/Pomeranian - but she could be Rattie/Chi - whatever, she is Rattie enough! Welcome to the site. Warning: It is very addictive!!!!
