Petco charged me $55 to shear, wash and clean up blue, our 90# dog. For me, that was CHEAP, because we've paid up to $80 to have her shaved.

Not compared to other breeds...my brother's friends breed dobies, and they can go for $1,000, depending on color (reds are rarer and therefore cost more than the standard black/tan).  I got my ratties for $300 each.  They were asking $400 per dog, but since we were getting 2, they gave us a deal and we got them for $100 less a piece.

Not many people around here know what ratties are.  I took them to a BBQ last month, and everyone kept saying "a RAT terrier?!  Why are they called that?  They don't LOOK like a rat!!"  So I ended up having to tell everyone the story about Teddy Roosevelt, and how it's all his fault that that's what they're called..."they're very good rat terriers"  Most people try to convince me that the girls are really smooth fox terriers.    At least my vet knows what they are...he said they were the nicest looking rat terriers he's ever seen.  (How many has he seen, though?)

I don't know where you live, but check to see if there is a Pete and Mac near you.  They are great, and they know Ratties.  My daugther is the general manager of the one near me and I know what kind of care she gives every dog in her care.
