Tinkerbelle's Mommy

Terrier Terror
Terrier Terror

I made a reservation today for Tinkerbelle to stay at the Petshotel at Petsmart.  When they asked for her breed and I said Rat Terrier, they were totally clueless.  She asked what other name do they go by.  I said "she's a rat terrier, that is the name of the breed".  They told me they didn't have rat terrier as a breed in their computers.  Are you kidding me????  It was just a few months ago that Ratties were on the cover of a magazine at every register.  Anyone else have a problem with our breed being recognized?

Anyone else ever stay at the Petshotel?  It looks lovely and they have little cots and TV's in these nice tiled rooms.  I'm worried about leaving my baby for even one night, but we are going out for my B-Day(It's a big one!!!)  Later in the summer we will be gone for a week, so I wanted to check out the kennel to see how she likes it.

It cost way more than the kennels I've used before with our previous doggie.  Tinkerbelle is so spoiled; I can't imagine leaving her in anything less than perfect.

Any input would be appreciated.  I'm worried

I have no info on the pet smart petshotel, but I can never find anyone at PetSmart or anywhere else who knows Rat Terrier as a breed, except for folks who have them. When I look at breed lists in stores for items, they never have Rat Terriers. heavy sigh

good luck with the pethotel, let us know how it is.

Me again,
I had a gentleman stop at our house a couple of days ago, he saw our new siding and the sign the siding folks put up in our yard. He wanted to get our opinion of the work, etc.
He came just inside the door and Aka came around the corner, the man said, what a cute dog, My wife has 4 Rat Terriers! I replied that Aka was a mini and he and I chatted a few minutes. I am going to call his wife to meet her.
4 Ratties! I can't wait. And less than a mile from me.

I would have said something about them having the Rat Terrier magazine! It is at all the PetsMart's now!

They do look like nice places to leave your dog though, but I've never used one, so I'm not sure.

Have you heard of Camp Bow Wow? I've heard they are really nice too. You can pull up your dog on a webcam to see them while you are away. Here is the website if you want to see if you have any near you: http://www.campbowwowusa.com/index.html

I think it's because they are not AKC yet -- and really, I have mixed emotions about them becoming AKC. I didn't know PetSmart did boarding. I use a local kennel that I just love. My trick is to start them young - even to go for a weekend - and, here's the big secret -- tell them they are going to camp!

Let me know how Tinkerbelle likes it. Julia & Caesar are staying at the Petshotel (at Petsmart) here over the 4th of July. I may cancel it though because my sister might be able to watch them. (she knows how spoiled they are and they love her) I've looked all around town here and it seemed to be the best place. Your right, a little expensive but nothing is too much for my babies. I would really like to know how it goes... thanks.
Oh, and it seems like so many people have Rat Terriers in the Omaha area...three of my sons friends have ratties. And everywhere I go I see people walking their rat terriers...

Except the old man that told you Cookie was in no way a rattie

There has been at least one person who knew Jack was a rattie at Petsmart everytime I've gone.  Maybe it is location?

My doggies have never and will porobably never use PetSmart's or any kennel ( We are even taking them with us on our honeymoon   but I have heard of PetSmarts kennels and that they are very nice and good.

Yes, I have the same problem with people not knowing what breed they are.  Apollo is my 15 lbs rat terrier and people will literally argue with me about what he is.  People want to tell me that he is a Jack Russell or A Fox Terrier or a cross between the two.  Emma is my 3.5 lbs rat terrier.  People LOVE to tell me what a cute Chihuahua she is.  While we were at the beach one man.... ONE!  said to me "They are rat terriers aren't they?"  I looked at him like he was a saint and with glee I said "YES!!!  Yes they are!!!!!"  One man outta probably 100 that asked about them or asked to pet them or made some sort of comment on them!  I'll be honest... I know I sound like a mean person but when I take Apollo and Emma shopping and someone says to me "What a cute JR/FT  and Chihuahua you have."  I just ignore them and if they say "excuse me, I said"  I say "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were talking to someone else... see I have two rat terriers, so you couldn't have been talking to me!"

My current boss was a PetSmart manager up in Atlanta years ago. He said they had to take a course on dog breed types and dog care (I assume other pets, too, but we were talking about dogs). The course probably just covered AKC breeds.

I can't believe that these people have never heard of the breed. They are very popular around this area as well. As a matter of fact i was in the petco store the other day and a lady shopping there was walking around with her rattie.

I took Bama to Petco today for pampering while I did my pampering at the nearby nail salon. When I went back to get him, we were walking through the store and an older gentleman asked if he was a rat terrier. I was so excited! Several people have asked what breed he was, and when I'd tell them he was a rat terrier, they'd say "That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure."

My vet clinic had him down as a "Rosen Terrier." I was like 'What the heck is that?"

They're pretty rare around here, too. We were at a bbq last weekend and I kept having to repeat "RAT terrier" when asked "Is he a Jack Russel?" repeatedly. The girl finally got it, wrinkled her nose at the word "Rat" and said "Let's just say he's a terrier."

They don't have Petshotels at every Petsmart.  This is a newer one and it does look really nice.  I'll let you guys know how it goes.  I was thinking about the AKC thing as well.  They actually do have a doggie day camp where they are put with other breeds of the same size and they play on slides obstacles together.  They are behind a glass wall so people can watch them playing.  I think Tinkerbelle will have fun with that.  She is a very social girl!

Yep -- they use the AKC list.  It's so funny to have people tell you that your dog doesn't exist.  Heh.  I am also dreading when Ratties move out of AKC FSS and into full AKC status.    More Ratties in rescue.

Russ goes to Doggie Day Camp one day a week at PetSmart PetsHotel - he LOVES it!
The staff seem really great, of course they love Russ cause he's such a people pleaser. He gets sooooo excited when I say we're going to Doggie Day Camp today- the full body wiggle.

I know the one here requires a Boardatella vaccine- you've probably already filled out the paperwork and such, but if not you might want to check that Tinkerbelle has all the vaccines they require.

When I was researching Rat Terriers I saw that they are more common in the Midwest- were used for vermin control on farms before pesticide use became common.

Morgan- thanks for the Camp BowWow info- I haven't heard of them before

We are just going back to the same beach.  With us paying for part of the wedding and 99.9% chance buying a new house shortly after the wedding we won't be able to go anywhere "spactacular".  But hopefully in about 3-5 years we'll go somewhere really nice.  Probably Caribbean or somewhere like that.

Yes, I could never leave my babies.  Just the other day Brad told me that Apollo was an extintion of my a$$. I can't believe he said that!  Oh, wait... yes I can!

Not Apollo... Brad says that Apollo will sit at the door forever and if I don't come back soon he'll go into his crate and sulk.  He's such a momma's boy!

At my area PetSmarts they have heard of Rat Terriers. I do agree many people have not heard of the breed, but I am surprised in the last couple years how popular the breed has become. I see Ratties everywhere and so many people saying they know someone with multiple Ratties.

IDK but when we went to Hawaii we called several times a day to check on our babies. We are lucky to have family come and stay ot our house to take care of them. It is hard to say who loves them and worrys more about them me or my husband. It is hard to leave your babies.

It is hard to leave your babies. I just got back from leaving Bailey for 3 days. I worried over it for a month and thought about canceling because I just didn't want to leave her. She ended up staying with my sister and her two girls, so I felt a little better. I did call twice a day to check on her.

I've had problems with this type of thing as well. I work at Barnes & Noble. Before I got Penny I wanted to do some research on the breed and couldn't find one book instore about Rat Terriers. I looked through our system and managed to find 2 books on the breed. I ordered them for instore first thing.

I had looked for info on the breed EVERYWHERE!!!! internet book stores library.... nothing...... then I found your website here!!! and I am in heaven.... I went to the petsmart here to see how much it wold be for a wash and wax on Boomer. (Opps did I say wax?) any way they looked it right up. and said on a small dog.... (so our petsmart does size categorizations).. they asked if he had short or long hair (that was the olny clarification they needed I guess..... ) but it is only 22 bucks for a groom up here!!!! at petsmart. I dont know the cost other places.... oh and that was for boomer my 110 lb yellow lab is 55 bucks!!!!
