Hello all.  We are currently looking for a companion for our male rat and happens to be that a neighbor is giving away her 5 month old rat.  She currently weighs around 8 pounds and our 3 year old weighs about 12.5.  We really want to try to find a companion that is or will be around our rat's size.  So I was wondering around how big approx. will this female rat get knowing that she is 8 pounds at 5 months old.  Any info or ideas greatly appreciated.

I don't know if this will help or not...but my Cookie was 13.5 at 5 mos; she's just a little over 2 years and is at about 17 lbs.

You may want to consider asking your neighbor what "Type" rattie she is. Their "Type" can really make a difference!

That is just the thing, she has no clue. She said it was a Jack Russell, which is what they told her when she bought it , but it does not look anything like a Jack and a lot like a Rat..

Dottie is almost 8lbs. and she is 5 months old. We think she will be 10-12lbs when grown (same as her mother).

My type B rattie, Mayfly, weighs a little over 11 pounds now and is full grown, don't remember what she weighed at 5 mos. but I think it was less than 8 pounds....they reach almost full height at 6 mos. but keep filling out after that.  So, if the pup is a purebred rattie, she may be a few pounds more than your guy.

Problem is if the owners don't even know what breed she is  - it's really hard to know how big she'll be!

Well, Amos was born March 1st.  That makes him almost 4 months old......I don't think he's a rat terrier anymore.  LOL  I think he's a HORSE that barks instead of whinneys.  He weighs 15lbs!  Amos came from a rescue and weighed 4 1/2 lbs at 7 weeks.  The lady told me she saw the parents and they weighed app 10-12lbs.  Wonder if Daddy was really Daddy?  KWIM?  I hope he slows down some.  I really wanted a lap dog when I got him.  No worries.  I love him and he's here to stay, even if he DOES get as big as a Great Dane.

Type A's are long legged and skinny.  Type B's are shorter and stockier.   Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but they have different body proportions too.  One type has a longer body than the other (I think the type B's).

My girls are type A Deckers.  They are 6 1/2 months old and 22 and 25 lbs.  It's hard to tell just how big ratties are going to get.  There is such a variety of sizes and body shapes in this breed.  I wouldn't worry if she ends up being a little bigger than the rattie you already have...my raties play with my dobie and they are just fine together.  They are pretty tough dogs.

I'd say that it's a personal preference, just like deciding whether you want a toy rattie or a decker or somewhere inbetween. I really didn't know too much about ratties when I got my girls, so I didn't know that there were different body types until I started reading more about them. All I knew was that I wanted a rattie and I wanted the largest rattie I could find (I have big dogs and wasn't sure how they'd react to a tiny dog, but they love the little ones!).

Sonic is a big boy weighs 22 pounds dont know what he was when younger we adopted him this last April.  Our JRT, Sydney, looks like a rat but is a Jack, she weighs 14 pounds.  Syd and Sonic get along good and play well together but once in awhile they still have disagreements.  Noise but to biting.  Think Sydney starts it most of the time.

Our Bailey is about 11-12lbs at 5 months now and near 13" at his shoulders-still tall and very lanky-leggy looking!  Folks say he looks like a little deer running around!

I think Tinkerbelle was almost 7 pounds at 5 months.  She's about 11 pounds now and she is 10 months old, but she is long and lean and oh so modelesque!

Update on the "horse" aka Amos.

Vet visit yesterday for his last puppy shots.  At 4 1/2 months old he now weighs in at a whopping 20lbs!    He is at least 15 inches at the shoulders(best I could measure the wiggly little mess!)  He is tall and lanky so I guess he is of the Type A Decker variety.  He has also "matured" to the point that the vet says he can be neutered at anytime.  I'm scheduling him for July 27th.  He is so hyper, I'm hoping it will slow him down abit.  For a little while anyway.

My grandson will be here this weekend and I hope to get some really good shots of both my special boys.

Mine are all different weights, Mysty is 1 1/2 years. and weighs 12 lbs and is about 12 inches tall, Maggie weighs 17 lbs and is about 15 inches and about 2. Simon is 15 lbs at 6 months, Berry is 12lbs at 6 months, Choklit is 12 lbs at 6 months, Ceecee is 14 lbs at 6 months.
I don't think that Simon will be bigger than Maggie ever he is just a little shorter at the shoulder, And we found out that Choklit is a Teddy Roosevelt terrier and can be registered as such even though she came out of a litter of type A's. and her mom and dad are both type A. She might be short but she is tough and mean! She is the beta female in the pack. Berry is shorter than Simon but not as small as Mysty who is the littlist. And Ceecee is about the same as Simon.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Bandit was 6-7lbs at 10 weeks and now at 5 mos. he's probably somewhere around 14-15lbs. I expect him to top out somewhere around 17-18 I think, maybe a little more.

To be honest, I believe dogs are happier when mismatched in size a bit. There's no question about dominance issues and they can really PLAY without worrying about their place in the pack. IME, (and within the pack) males tend to be a little gentler with dogs that are smaller than them. Females tend to enjoy picking on those below them a little more (just my experience).
