After the recent talk of Parvo on this site, I still didn't bother to rush my 8 month old dog out to get her a vaccine. Now, I think she has been exposed. Today, I went to talk to a neighbor and her daughter advised me that they had just had 2 of their puppies die of Parvo and that my dog shouldn't be walking through their yard. AUGH!
I picked her up and ran home. I went crazy and dipped her paws in a bleach and water mix. I went online and found that you can get it from fecal matter. I remembered that yesterday we were walking through the neighborhood and she stopped to smell some dog poop. When I realized it, I pulled her away. I don't know, but I think that, through these two incidents, she has been exposed. We went ahead and gave her the vaccine today. Will that help? What should I do? Thankfully our other dogs have been vaccinated.

| My vet said they need at least three shots, a few weeks apart to be protected the most. My puppies have already had all three. We wanted to make sure LeeLee, was especially protected, before she went to Kim's house, because Amos had it as a puppy, a year and a half ago. What did your vet say? My puppies are getting their first series of rabies shots Tuesday. |

| Silly--stuff always happens on the weekend. We just ran to the farm supply place to get the vaccine today (Sunday). I don't want to have to wait till tomorrow to find out what to expect. Was the rinsing the paws in bleach water over the top? It hasn't seemed to bother her. |

umm i dont know about the bleach but just keep an EXTREMELY close eye on her...if you notice anything unusual (lethargic, not eating or drinking, vomiting or diareah) take her to the vet immediately...if she was exposed today, she will not die overnight from it ...if you catch it early it is very treatable, but expensive. with Trixi, we caught it really early,,,it was 600 bucks and two nights at the vet and shes healthy as ever. We took her in the first time she refused water after running. It seemed weird to me..... good luck and were crossing fingers and paws here! |

I'm with Mary, just keep a close eye on her. At 8 months old I would hope her immune system is strong enough to handle the exposure. I feel you did the right thing by vaccinating her, and that vaccine should provide immunity for years. Puppies need 2 or 3 parvo vaccinations because when they are born, they have immunities from their mother. The length of that protection varies from dog to dog so you have to give several parvo vax to protect them. A booster is given at one year that may provide protection for life. It's been proven in tests to last 7 years. You could order some Parvaid (parvo remedy) as a preventative, since she was exposed to the virus. It can be ordered from http://www.ambertech.com/parvaid.php |

| That is great information. I kept hearing that you had to re give the shot to puppies. I couldn't understand why. and that is kind of why I hesitated giving her anything. Thanks for the web address. We found her only a couple of months ago. For all we know, she could have already had the vaccine. That would be nice but unlikely. |

Hopefully she was already vaccinated when you found her. I don't give yearly vaccines to my adult dogs (my personal dogs) except rabies BUT I do know they all had their puppy shots and first year shots....I would never NOT vaccinate at all...the risk of diseases like parvo and distemper is just too great. |

It can last up to ten years in the ground. So that yard needs to be off limits.
We don't send our pups home till 12 weeks so they have two shots done. We would like to see 16 weeks so they are finished. We only have 1-2 litters a years so it's our choice with our vets backing. |

| It's been one week and she seems well. I've hesitated writing this message because I don't want to jinx myself. I think if we have one more healthy week, then I can relax. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the information. |

Good. And, for the record, I might have done the bleach water thing too... you never know if maybe there were germs there you killed before they could get her sick! |
