Hi my wife Jean and I have a boy rattie named sammy, who we rescued from the county pound. That was 2 yrs ago,he is about 3-4 yrs old. We adopted a yellow lab puppy a week later and Sammy absolutely dominates him and bosses him around,it is funny to see. They are best friends but what sammy says gos.His vet calls him a real pistol. He sleeps between us at night on his back with the covers up to his armpits and his head on the pillow-just like a child!!! I have to learn how to post his photo it will be soon hopefully,we are older and not to computer savvy.

Welcome! Sammy sounds like many of our ratties. My Mitzy sleeps between me and hubby with her head on the pillow half the time. LOL

To post pics it's easiest to use the Photo Forum and remember they need to be 125 kg or less and be in .jpg (small letters) format.

Yay!!! Can't wait to see him (and his Lab 'brother'). A lot of ratties are mislabeled, especially if you are in an area of the country where they are just not well known.

OK,so the avatar pic was easy. This is Sammy and big younger brother Max,2 yrs old.I have some pics of Sammy that are REALLY funny. I dont know if others do this, but Sammy likes to suck on his be-be (pacifier) especially when there is company over,he is a ham.

Welcome! From your avatar, it looks like Sammy is type B (aka Teddy Roosevelt...short legs). He loves to suck on a pacifier?! Too funny! I had a male mix (breeds unknown, but possibly part rattie) that would "nurse" on his stuffed toys every night before dinner...he'd put himself to sleep doing that. The closest I've ever seen another one of my dogs doing something like that is Molly who nibbles her stuffed toy before bed.

can't wait to see more pics of Sammy and his brother Max.

Thanks again,we love this site!!! There are some beautiful rat pictures here.I love the pic of Daisy, with those sleepy eyes. And it was nice to hear we have a type B Ratty(short legs). We did notice Sammy is a little shorter then most others. And I love the expression "Labrats" for the lab siblings!!! They are SUCH good dogs to live together, they both love to play and no matter how much snarling or teeth are shown the tails are always wagging.About once a year they "fight". The noise is horrendous and they lunge and snap, but never an actual bite by either one!

I have noticed that almost all the Rattys pictured on the site have very short hair....I was wondering if shaving them short is something people do and if so is there any reason other then to show off thier musclebound little bodys?? Our Sammy has a little longer hair then most,or is that a "teddy" trait? Thanks so much in advance for any replys.

Ratties typically have very short coats, with no shaving or trimming.

Sammy may be a rattie mix if he has longer hair...maybe part wire-haired JRT? with rescues, you can never be 100% sure of their background. like Tracey said, ratties have short coats...mine have coats similar to both dobie's and boxer's, very short.
