My boyfriend of about four months has two RTs, Eli and Layla. In those four months, Eli has progressively gotten worse at peeing in the house. When we take the dogs out, they use do their business, but not ten minutes after coming back inside, Eli has peed somewhere. He has a few "usual spots" that he does this. We can always tell when he's peed in the house because he comes around with a REALLY guilty look on his face.

I think it's a jealousy issue, even though he's spoiled rotten. My boyfriend doesn't think so.

Can y'all think of any solutions to getting Eli to stop peeing inside the house?

First thing i would do, is to have him checked out for urinary tract infection....   I had that same problem with one of my dogs, and then he got on some antibiotic... and he has not had any peeing problems since....

he may feel the urge to pee alot and can't help it...  and he may be in pain....  because i know urinary tract infections are painful.

So rule that out first.... and go from there.

Oh and welcome to the site and keep us posted on Eli please! and we also love pictures!

Welcome to the site. 2 questions.... How old is Eli and is he neutered? Sounds like he may be marking.

Eli is about six years old? Maybe older?

And he is no neutered.

I'll mention the UTI to my boyfriend, but I guess it really didn't cross our minds that the issue could be something medical since he doesn't pee in the house consistently and it started as soon as I started spending more time in the house. Eli has SO much personality and will generally pee in certain spots when, for example, we go into a room and shut the door. If he can't get in, he pees on something.

This behavior sounds like territorial marking to me. What kind of relationship do YOU have with Eli? Does he display aggression towards you?

Having him neutered at this late date may or may not help the situation. But since I always urge owners to alter their pets I would suggest that be done as soon as possible. I realize your bf may not agree with this as some men seem to have a strong aversion to neutering. LOL

Eli doesn't display any aggression toward me. We play and take naps together. He's a very sweet dog and he seems to be perfectly fine being WITH me, but he's not really getting Daddy's attention like he used to.

Layla was fixed, but my boyfriend didn't want to take away Eli's manhood. (insert eye roll here ) There's even been talk of getting rid of Eli since he's ruining the hardwood floors. I *think* it's just talk though. But just in case it isn't, that's why I'm here.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm sorry my first post was one asking for advice!

Too rid of a dog that has a problem that most likely would have been prevented by neutering is not fair. Again, human error is the cause of a dogs problem. Neutering may not help immediately BUT in my opinion you will never fully stop it if you don't neuter him. Sounds like he is definately marking. You were new to the household as of 4 months, right? And you say he has gotten worse over those four months. There has been a change to his environment which could have prompted him to start doing this and now it is becoming a habit. Step one...neuter. Step two...training. Keep an eye on him at all times or crate him. They also make belly bands that can help prevent it while you are working on fixing the issue.

I agree...sounds like marking behavior to me. By all means have him checked for a UTI but if he doesn't have one....then it's marking. Any change in the household can prompt a male, particularly an unneutered male, to mark...it's his way of saying "this is mine". Has nothing to do with whether he likes you or not....in fact I've even seen dogs mark a human as theirs! (No, not my dogs, thankfully!)

It is NOT fair to send him away for something that he is doing naturally because your bf never altered him! And yes, it may not stop suddenly after neutering, especially because he's been intact for 6 years, but it will help. Keep in mind it may take 6 weeks or so for the hormones to subside after neutering, too.
