I am having a horrible time with the twins tody. It has been raining off and on and the dogs refuse to go out to do their business.

I had to throw them out the door today and they just stood there and did not go. When I opened the door to go out with them they ran in and hid. I called and called for them to come to me and they would not. I finally found one-Franny and had to drag her out of her cage to go, she was so upset she ran away. Their is a small portion of the fence she can get through and she did. Finally Patty came to me on her own and I had to put her out too. Did they do their business? Nope. Lucky for me Fran was out the front yard and she ran inside when I called her.

Since then we had quiet time. I fed them and we played and rested and then I attempted twice more to get them to do their business. I even went out with them. I went out in the rain to try to coax them to go and of course they would not. I was gentle with them and gave them enough time to relax outside on the porch and it did not work.

They came back in and went right to their crate where they have been for the last hour. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!

I am in a wheelchair but, I can and do walk short distance like to the porch etc.....so I do not have the mobility to do anymore then I can. I am exhausted.  I am discouraged. I had a shower and then ate some protein and a yogurt and here I sit.

This potty issue is harder then if they were babies. At times I wish I would of gotten babies, this way it might have been easier to start from a clean slate, but, they did win my heart.  I made a committment to them. I just feel like we take one step forward and two steps back with potty training them.

seems a lot of Ratties don't like to go out in the rain. I go through the same thing with Russ- have to force him out. I will say, he sure can hold it! Hopefully the rain will let up soon and you can send them out again.

Hang in there! Could your son come over later and take them out on a leash?

Are they crossing their legs and holding it or have they had accidents inside today? If they aren't having accidents, don't worry about it. They will have to go sooner or later.

You know it is funny that you say this because i have only had to take Izzy out once in the rain since we have had her.  She will go out some what reluctant but does.  But then she won't go either.  She just stands there and looks as me!  But i have to go out with her because we don't have  fenced yard so i don't like it much either.  So i guess i can't blame them too much! But that would be hard

They have not had any accidents inside, not yet !!!!  My daughter took them out at 6 am before it rained. I do not know if they went then, but I think they did.

My dogs were not trained to do anything, they are a year old and just learning basic commands and doing good with that. They are not leashed trained yet. I have not had them very long.

OHHHHHHHHHHH that lady who owned these dogs before lied to me these dogs were not house trained or trained to do anything but run loose..

It seems odd that she would have just let then run around her house all the time though? Not that she didn't i'm sure she did but that would be gross to not try to potty train them? They are smart dogs though and they will catch on with time!

This is interesting because I never thought about this situation. However it made me think when I have my chihuahua, he wouldn't go out in the rain for nothing...I could almost imagine him standing at the door looking up at me with his legs crossed.. :-)... Well, now that I have Shadow, I guess I will just have to wait and see. Here in Phoenix, it doesn't rain that much because we are in the desert. BUT we do get monsoon season where we get really bad rain and thunderstorms. This will be interesting.

I hope all works out well for you. You can train them but it takes patience and lots of treats and praises. I hope it stops raining soon... Try to have a good weekend....

Hey! You are doing the best you can! Don't feel down about it. Most of these pups do not like to go out in the rain. It will just take time a patience to get them potty trained. It took me several weeks to get Savanna used to going out side, rain or not. She used to go outside, play, then come in and potty. She was a stray, so I don't know her history. Good luck, and don't give up!

Apollo HATES the rain.  He won't go out in it either.  I've given up trying. So I let Apollo go in the garage.  I know sounds bad but I'll pick up the solid just as I would outside and then when the weather permits we'll move the cars out and spray the gagrage with PineSol and water.

Emma uses her pee pads 99.9 % of the time I don't worry about her as much.

Yeah neither Bronson nor Pepper like to go out when its raining. When I let them out, they will reluctantly go out and then usually just stand there staring in the back door at me, like why are you making us suffer through this. I usually do try to leave them out until they finally decide to go just so they can get back in. Bronson is better at this than Pepper, but then she is only 8 months old.

My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog thinks I am!

Mario hates the rain too!  I think this is pretty normal for ratties.. or any dog for that matter.

I have to go out in the rain WITH Mario before he'll 'go'!  He will NOT move beyond the back door if I force him out and shut the door.  He looks at me like I'm killing him...

I hate it when it rains for that reason only...

Bailey will not go out in the rain. If it rains all day and into the night, she will finally go out when she can no longer stand it.

I guess if I was a dog I would not want to go out in the rain either to go potty.

These dogs are not babies anymore. I hope they get their potty training down soon. I think these dogs were crated all the time and left out only to potty. That would say a lot about them not being trained to listen to commands.
