Hi..I just found this site!  I recently (3 months ago) adopted a 1.5 - 2 year old Rat Terrier.  Her name is Sally (although I call her leapin lily cuz she jumps like she's on a pogo stick).  I've never owned a terrier before so this is pretty unique to me.  My last dog was a Beagle, so I'm familiar with stubborn!  Sally came to us housebroken, but no other manners had been taught.  We are working on Sit, and Come (hahahaha).  She actually sits pretty good.  The "come" part is funny as she will come running if she thinks I have a treat.  But if she doesn't, then she just looks at me like...Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

So as I browse through your website, I hope to find some helpful hints on how to train my Sally Girl.

Thanks!

Carrie

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

WELCOME!! so many newbies lately- its great!! I call my wild-child Chloe "willful" and she's a jumper too! At a good run she can get all fours on my chest in a single leap - and I'm 5'9"! I just adopted Bonnie last month, no springs in her legs though -lol.

Go to the Training section and there is a thread there on Recall. That should prove to be very helpful. Good luck! Can't wait to see pictures of Sally.

~~ Life is awesome when you share it with a couple of Ratties! ~~

We had a beagle for 14 years.  2 days before we moved to our new house he died (last September).  Darling Hubby has this thing about taking a puppy outside in -20 degrees to go piddles (can't imagine why) so we decided that we'd wait until Spring to think about another pet/family member.  Meanwhile we unpacked the new house and got situated.  Then my grandchildren came to live with us (ages 8 and 10) and they were begging for a puppy.  My grandson declared it was Spring on the first warm day in March and told me..."you know you said spring Nana".....well........................  Yeah I did, but I really didn't want a puppy because nobody was home all day long and it wasn't fair to a baby to be left in a crate all day.  So we started looking at "doggie adoption clinics".  My 10 year old Granddaughter (Toria) wanted to "save" a furry friend as she calls them.

So we adopted Sally from Homeward Bound Dog Rescue.  Apparently Sally was picked up in Alabama (she's a southern gal) and the vet there said she was a JRT.  Somehow she got to Upstate NY through Homeward Bound and the vet for them said, no she was not JRT she was a Rattie.  They also felt she was over 2 years old.  However, after we adopted her we took her to our vet and he said she was a fantastic dog coming from a shelter.  He said she was definitely a Rat Terrier and was only about 1 year to 1.5 years old.

Enough ramble I think.  Time to go explore the site and find out where to put some pictures of Sally and see some stuff about TRAINING my Feist!
