ok heres my story. my 13 year old cat died not too long ago, and now we still have our young cat, and she needs a playmate. plus my mom and i decided to get a cat for my brother. well i want to adopt one for him and i have always grown up around cats and i feel the desire to have one.
my question is,, if i got a cat now, id still be getting a rattie puppy in the fall, which is good for socialization, but i want to know if it be too much finantially for me to handle while im at school or not?
i have time to devote to a puppy, seeing as i am only gone for a couple hours each day, and i know cats are more independent, and not as much work needs to be done for them.
i really would love to have a cat and a dog, i would be in heaven, but i dont want my desired to be a bad idea for my pets.
what do all of you think? would it be ok for me to rescue a cat and then get my puppy in the fall? or would that be too much for me to handle and best if i stick to one animal?
i have a lot of room in my house at school, and 2 roommates so thats not what im worried about. i just want to know what other people think about it, and their opinions or experience. thanx guys, an be nice please |

that's a hard call...only you can really know what's best for you and your situation. I think what it really amounts to is being a responsible pet owner, which it sounds like you are really trying to be...good for you. I'd love to get another rattie, for instance, but what keeps me from doing so is knowing that things come up and pets get sick...would I be able to take care of all their daily needs AND the vet bills when one (or more) of them get sick? It's not just about the time/energy involved in having a pet. You just really need to think about what's best for you and any pet(s) you decide to adopt...I'm sure you will make the right decision. |

yeah i know what you mean, ive gone over all those senarios (sp?) for months before i made the final decision to get a rattie. i know i will have the finances for if a pet gets sick, becasue i will be working all summer an have extra savings in case something like that happens. and if i adopt there is a small adoption fee but im pretty sure the majority are up to date on shots and fixed, so i guess kitty litter stuff and food and then if a vet bill comes up are my only concerns. maybe i should wait till i have my puppy and she is completely house trained, i should think about getting a cat friend for her i still dont know what would be best. but i would love to hear other peopls opinions as well. it may bring up things i havnt though about. thank you tiggarat for your opinion |

| Having puppies and kittens now and have always had them what I can say is...How much of you will be available for the pets and how much of you will be available for every thing else in your life. Right now, including the pups and kittens we have over 65 animals, 45 of them are chickens, and it takes alot of time. It would be nice for the animals to be adopted and if you decide to give yourself some time betwen adoptions to get used to haveing the pet in your life and please, please, please make sure that each animal has been around the other kind if you are getting older ones...younger animals are more easily adaptable to other animals than older ones.........Good luck....... |

| well i am in college and and i have 3 hours of class a day, 10-12 and then 1-2, so i would have pleanty of time, like i said, maybe it would be easier to get my puppy first and see how it goes before i mke another decision. ugh i am always so indecisive, but thats why i am asking others opinions. thank you |

Taking proper care of pets can be very expensive. If you are concerned about being able to financially support all the needs of two pets, I would probably do what you just thought about. Get one pet first and then see how it goes. You may also want to put it down on paper. Howe much will it cost to support the pets? How much money do you have? How much time will they need and how much time do you have? Putting things down in black and white will help see your options a little clearer. |

thanx fuji's mom! yeah thats what i did awhile back when i decided to get a rattie. i still crunch those numbers everyonce in a while and make sure i am ready, but i know i am! i think i will either just wait and try it with one animal at first or do the paper thing. maybe when we get a kitten for my brother (hopefully adopted again) i will get one as well, but let it stay at my house with the other 2. i used to have a cat bo that i got when i was 6, and a cat oscar that i got when i was 8. but a couple weeks before i started college they both dissapeared a couple weeks apart. they were inside/ouside cats, i dont know if something happened to them or if they just got old and passed away it was a really sad time for me becasue i had oscar for 11 years and bo for 13 years! i really miss them. i have the cutest pictures of me when i was younger with them. im just glad that i got my mom a cat, but i still wanna cry when i see pics of them. i miss them so much! i think i will convince my mom to adopt 2 cats together so when i come home i can see them all and socialize them with my rattie, then maybe next year i will get a cat of my own. i am just such an animal lover, i want them all! haha thanx everybody for all your advice |
