Our harlee is just over 1.5 years old and my wife is thinking we should get her a playmate. I am not sure if there is enough in me to handle another rattie, so I was thinking maybe a different breed. Harlee went to puppy playtime while she was growing up and did very well there. She likes to play but is afraid at the same time. My wife was thinking this would be good for her while we are at work. She recently lost her freedom and is back in her pen for chewing a hole in two couches. wifey thinks a playmate my keep her from doing bad things. I think she would just teach the new puppy such bad things. Any advice? should we get her a playmate and what breeds get along well with the ratties.
Thanks
Bill and Kim |

Puppies should always be crated while not being supervised. It's best for older dogs, too, so that they don't get into anything they shouldn't. Here's a website I use when looking up breeds. It gives you a general idea of a type of dog. Here's the 'purebred' page: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/purebred.htm |

We always leave the TV on and she does watch tv it is funny to see her bark at the other animals and any thing that is running. We can't do cats Kim is allegric and harlee has to much of the hunting instinct. I am thinking it will have to be a relaxed dog one that is not as high strung as harlee.
thanks

We got our wild male named tobey a playmate. He loves her so much. she is about 1 yr older than she is. They play so good together. She was a rescue from a woman we did not know that had to get rid of her. She is so sweet. I agree they get bored. We have had ratties for 30 yrs. they are the best. |

Yep, they are like potato chips..I could not have just one! When I think back when we just had Winchester, I think how lonely he must have been, to be the only rattie. They sure love to play together.

You can say that again! My Sam is a regular floor potatoe (he isn't aloud on the couch)
I think that the larger sized ratties (deckers) aren't as high strung as the smaller types. |

I think that having two dogs can be helpful; however, I would say it has more to do with the individual dog's personality than with a certain breed. Also, I'd try and remember a crate or pen is not a bad thing, most of them see it as den, their own special place. Plus, the side benefit is your couches are safe. In your case, I'd really recommend that you perhaps consider rescuing a dog from a shelter. One that you and Kim, and Harlee can go meet and interact with before coming home. A good choice may be an out-of-the-puppy stage dog whose personality is more easily read than a puppy. No matter the breed (even ratties) it is very difficult to predict their personalities in terms of energy level, etc. to any sort of guarantee...the best you can hope for is broad generalizations, but there are always exceptions to every rule. Some things I would keep in mind: you may want a more low-key dog than Harlee, but I'd be careful not to get one who is so low-key that Harlee is going to drive him/her crazy Also, if you do consider rescue and do a visit, try to have the visit occur outside away from the shelter building. I think all of the other dogs and the overall atmosphere of the place can keep the dogs meeting from giving a good indication of how they'll reallly be. In that same vein, realize that any dog's behavior may change once he/she is actually in your home and comfortable with being part of your pack. You wouldn't be the first person to bring home a mild, calm, shy dog who after a few weeks or months, let their true inner self shine and once the commitment is made, it's made. Though their are also plenty of rescue organizations that will let you temporarily, on a trial basis, take the dog home for a visit, to make sure things look like they'll work out. Sorry for the long post. Welcome to the site. We insist on some pics of Harlee |
