ok i thought finding the right size collar for scooter was kind of a challenge but, we have developed two new ones. we are going through the biting and chewing stage. ive called the vet and asked him what to do as far as the biting and she said to hold his muzzle until he yelps? ok ive tried this and added the words "no bite" and it seems to make him mad. am i doing it wrong?
second the chewing, when i see him chewing on something hes not supposed to be i replace it with one of his toys or a raw hide. my other dog usually has one laying around. any help is greatly appreciated, i want to grow up to be gentle as i do have neices and nephews who like to play with him. maybe im overloading him with too many things |

I can only think of a spray bottle... but I'm sure someone else on here can give you great advice I never heard of holding the muzzle like that though. I always heard you yourself yelp and act like he hurt you... As far as him being gentle around little ones, I wanted the same for Mic because of new babies in the family, so we got advice to do things that babies would do to him... before he ever meets a baby. Like tug on his ears, bump him, bug him while he's eating, etc... We did this for a long time and now he doesn't even pay attention when we do these things. He has been around babies and is very gentle with them But before you ever bring him around a baby, I would get some more advice, I'm not a pro at this stuff! But just thought I would share |

ive tried the yelping and he barks at me....lol he was the only pup to survive out of his litter so he didnt have the chance to learn about how to play without being too rough. but im not going to give up. i know it takes some time and effort. im gonna jump off this a minute.
sometimes i catch myself comparing him to my other rt that i had for 15 yrs. she was 3 when i got her. she took to me instantly. about a yr or so ago she developed breast cancer and the vet said he wouldnt chance operating on her because at the time she was 17 and he was afraid with her age she wouldnt pull through it so we left it go as it wasnt bothering her. she was still an active fart. in march of 07 she was diagnosed with conjest heart failure so we had her on pills which worked until the week before palm sunday she started acting funny , couldnt walk without stumbling around, she lost her appetite and was going down hill fast. but i didnt give up on her. after struggling she died palm sunday in my arms. she looked at me as i was holding her and told her i would be fine to go ahead and go to sleep and thats what she did. took her last breath. i wasnt ready to part with her but , then i thought to myself would i ever be ready? no not really but this is all apart of the circle of life. it took 2 weeks of sleeping with her dog sweater to not get over her but to feel some closure because she wasnt going to have to take anymore pills and have to stumble around anymore. she was free. i know shes still here because i can hear her at times. |

It's okay really. I'm glad you shared your story. I thought used to be one of those people who thought people with pets were crazy for somet things they did for them. But after now only having Izzy for a week and a half i totally understand. She is truely my second child. I worry about her just as much as my human child.
I had a dog (Rusty-Poodle,bishon not sure if spelling is correct) But got him when i started preschool and he was just a baby himself. A few years after i graduated high school my parents had him put down because he lost control over pretty much every part of his body. He couldn't see walk or do anything really. He was in so much pain. I just asked my parents not to tell me when they were doing it because i didn't want to think about him being put down. It was very hard. I cried when i found out after it was done. My mom made sure to to remind me that with getting Izzy the day would once come for her too. She told me it was one of the hardest things she had to do. Now being an adult and having a child of my own it will be harder for me now then it was loosing my child hood dog.
But it was a very good experiance for me growing up and i want the same for my daughter. It is all the circle of life and she will soon learn the same. |

I'm so sorry about your rattie girl. For the biting, I've never heard the muzzle thing - these dog don't do well with physical punishment. They tend to fight back or get more agressive (it's bred into them from having to fight rats years ago...they don't let go when the rats bite.) |

That is amazing that your pupply lived to be 17-18, my old dog was a cocker spaniel lhasa apso and she lived to be 16 when we had to put her to sleep! Your story made me tear up at work too! I didn't know rat terriers lived that long! That makes me happy because i definately LOVE my baby!!! |

We also have a problem with Macie and chewing on things.. She's only 7 months though and starting to get a little better about it so I'm hoping she will get over it We take whatever she is chewing on and give her a toy but usually in the process of doing that she hits me a couple times with her paws! |

| When i took my 18yr old to the vet he couldnt believe how old she was either. he said i must be doing something right. i give them all my love and attention when im not at work. i heard your inside dogs live longer than some outside ones, i dont know how much truth there is to that. but once again its all on how they are taken care of. i have a golden retriever shepard mix and she is about 15 or so |

Scooter is so adorable! As far as biting goes, I've also tried to hold her muzzle, but it really hasn't worked that well. I have a 3 year old who is constantly playing (irritating) with Tinkerbelle and she has had a few bites. I tell my daughter to put her hands on her hips and say NO BITE. This actually helps. It's a learning curve for both of them. If Tinkerbelle bites her out of aggression, I do yell at her and I remove her ( usually putting her outside)
As far as chewing on things, this breed is notorious for destroying their toys. They love to chew. I have a bottle of bitterspray(you can get at petsmart). When she is chewing something major like the couch, I spray it with the bitter taste and then she stops. I now think I could just get a spray bottle because the second I spray, she runs away...she doesn't even bother to taste it.
Hope that helps. Your story made me cry too. I had to put my Cocker Spaniel to sleep a couple of years ago and it was the most painful event for me to watch, but I was glad that I was there to comfort him while he went to sleep. No more pain and now I know he's running around like a puppy with my Dad in heaven.

| I am here crying my eyes out, as I just lost the love of my life a few weeks ago....sniff...sob....sniff.... I am so happy for you that you have another Rattie to love. I know with my three girls it was like I had a full time job just caring for them. Sally of course ran away from my son's house and was found this morning, so hopefully she will adjust at my son's home. She did everthing, chewed, peed, pooped and just ran wild and would not listen. I was often in tears just trying to deal with her. Now it is peaceful with just the twins. These dogs are like are children and should be treated as such. Like children they need strong boundaries and with a lot of repeating will learn. A sray bottle is a wonderful idea and a safe one. |

i think holding their muzzle makes them mad actually. i started using a stern voice with him today and have been using the spray bottle when he is doing something he shouldnt be doing. so far so good.
scooter may be adorable but you can see the devil in him...lol i sit and sing elvis presleys song devil in disguise to him... he just goes crazy...i think when my hubby came across him it was a sign from nikki that she wanted us to get him. i had a nick name for her too that she loved "stinkin rottin flea bag" man was she spoiled rotten |

Hello everyone,
I just got an 11 week old female Rattie, she is doing very well for the most part. I am lucky in that I have 2 other very well trained (Aussies) dogs that the puppy seems to mimic. I have experienced the biting thing, and her little teeth are so dang sharp! I yelp, and put her down and walk away. They seem to be more sensitive then most dogs, so this does work.
I have been working with her so she knows her name. It advises that you call her name and if she doesn’t respond to leave her sight. If she comes; positive reinforcement and or treats. Supposedly this teaches her to respond appropriately or she looses me. I am applying the same thought process to the chewing thing.
I am open to any suggestions for better methods.
Thanks in advance,
Roxie's Mom

HI Welcome ya'll, When Sassy was a puppy, we played kinda rough and one time she drew blood on my hand.. I showed her the blood and told her "you hurt Mommy!" she didn't play so rough after that.. She understands the word hurt... When I adopted Punkin, Sassy and her got in a fight and she drew blood on Punkins leg.. I told Sassy , you hurt her! and since then they don't get so rough.. |

I think you're doing the right thing with the biting...she'll learn what is too rough. I high-pitched "yelp" and removing yourself from her should do most of the work as will providing her with appropriate things that she can chew to help with her "teething". With Daisy, I went with the school of thought, if you will, that some mouthing was ok - as long as it was made clear what was "too much" and hurt. This way she has developed a "soft mouth" meaning she can (and does) mouth things, but knows not to do it hard or aggressively. |
