i feel like im cursed ... and i do not have a problem with taking my dog to the vet, just wanted advice first.

i had a tft and she had ibs/colitis and had bloody stool about once a month .. took her to the vet over and over and she was ok

i lost her recently in an accident, and i purchased a rat terrier pup ... brought her home yesterday and today she finally ate for me,

and she had bloody mucousy stool exactly the same as my prior tft.      AM I CURSED ????

is this an adjustment thing/food thing/

im not sure what to do ... is this common for a ratty ?   she is 7 weeks old, 2 pounds.. very small and was the runt.

she was vetted on thursday and they said all appeared ok.  please advise.

thanks     angela   (newbie)

Goodness! I'm sorry I have no medical advice. I just wanted to welcome you and your new baby. hopefully someone here can help. If she's still having nasty poos tomorrow I would take her in to the vet again. Is this a vet that you trust the opinion of?

If you just brought her home yesterday, who took her to the vet Thursday? Or am I just confused. Did she see your vet?

I would get her to the vet ASAP and I do mean IMMEDIATELY. A pup that young can decline very rapidly. And there is a chance perhaps that it is Parvo since she wouldn't be fully vaccinated for that yet.

I'm sorry about the loss of your previous dog. IBS/Colitis would not be contagious...are you sure they had the diagnosis correct with her?

1) take her to the vet right off - she's little and they can turn quickly from ill to VERY ill. Esp. if they get dehydrated.

2) what are you feeding this pup and what did you feed the previous dog?

hi she was vetted by the prior owner. i called that same vet that saw her today and said she has been fully vaccinated and wormed ...  she said she is so small that i should try to feed her baby food chicken and rice ... so i got some ....  for a day or two to see how she does.. that possibly the new home has upset her stomach....   so i hope thats it ...

If she is only seven weeks old then I dont think she has had the Parvo shot yet. Please get the advice of anouther vet.

Watch real close for dehydration, and check her gums to make sure they stay pink. To check for dehydration pinch a small amount of skin on her front leg, let go, if it falls back immeditaly OK, if the pinch stays up for awhile ( more than10 seconds) she is dehydrated and needs IMMEDIATE vet attention. Good luck and thanks for letting us know how she is. Keep us posted.

I just wouldn't rely on the word of the breeder's vet...I'd take her to my own vet. Transitioning food can cause loose stool but shouldn't cause diarhea or bloody or mucusy stool. My foster dog recently had bloody diarrhea and mucus in it and it turned out to be bacterial enteritis. However, he's a fully grown standard size male - your little pup can dehydrate so quickly!

she has had parvo and distemper, dewormed and vet said to feed her baby food

so i got a couple jars of it and mixed it with her food

she is very playful and active and bushytailed

drinking alot of water regularly and pottying regularly

they said to watch her over the next day see if her poop becomes more solid ....

she said it may be stomach upset due to the new home .....

if she feels yukky still tomorrow she is going to go see my vet

which will be her vet anyway .....    ive seen this in my other pup .. and they say they outgrow it ...

harley was just getting over it and she was 2 years old when she was killed  ....

i didnt think it was contagious, just think its part of the breed and both of my dogs

have been the runts ... therefore they are very tiny ....   i will keep you posted ... thanks everyone ..

i love this new little girl ... she is really bringing joy to our lives in a time of sadness....

Loose stool can be a problem when switching food but only for a few days....this is not something specific to rat terriers and doesn't take two years to get over.  What are you feeding her?  Allergies are a common problem in rat terriers and most low quality foods have corn, soy, wheat (common allergens) in them.  (By low quality foods I mean foods like Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Pedigree, etc.)

I still think she needs to see a vet (preferably not the one you talked to) Just my opinion, but if he told you she was fully vaccinated at 7 weeks, he must be wrong. It takes a series of vaccinations spread out over the first few MONTHS to be FULLY vaccinated. She likely has had only 1 set of shots. Please see another vet. At her age and size, bloody, mucuousy diarrhea can be fatal.

I agree with MB, that I've never hear of this type of thing being specific to RTs (or any breed for that matter) and two years is not normal.

She needs to see the vet. Like everyone has said, at 2lbs and 7 weeks it can be fatal.  Sounds to me like you may have a case of coccidae going on.   It can be found in any dogs system, but the stress of moving to a new home and being seperated from littermates can allow it to get out of control.  With out meds, no matter what the cause, she can become dehydrated within a matter of hours if it is bad.   It could also be a number of other things regardless of whether or not she has been vaccinated, at 7 weeks she is not immune to anything.  Also, at 7 weeks, the immune system is not developed enough to have an autoimmune disorder such as IBS.  Welcome to the site and please keep us posted.
