| Yep, I have one with it and I know Trixi (Mary's girly if I remember right) has it and had surgery. My girl Ava doesn't need surgery at this point, but we just keep her at a good weight and can give her glucosimine supplements to keep the joints lubed up. |

| My 11 year old Rattagan has this problem. The left knee has been corrected through surgery. You will probably find pics in the photo section somewhere about his surgery. The right knee is now exhibiting the same thing with him limping and trying to straighten it out behind him to put it back in place. He weighed 20 pounds at his first surgery but has lost down to 16 pounds. The weight loss has helped keep the right knee from getting worse faster, though it too will need to be fixed eventually. They usually do not do the surgery on a young dog unless it is very severe. Talk to your vet, you can give supplements to help improve the movement of the leg. The surgery is not pleasant for you or the dog, although Ratty never whined or complained, you know he had to be in awful pain after that. Phil and I took turns sleeping on the floor with him for the first two weeks. We carried him up and down the steps since he couldn't manage it on his own and had to walk him even in the fence on his leash for the two weeks as well so he wouldn't overdo it and hurt himself. It tore me up to see him like that but watching him run now has made it all worth it. It is not in-expensive, here in Florida it was about $1300 and he had to stay overnight. He was still very drugged when he came home and had pain meds and antibiotics to take at home. I wish you and your pup well and hope that it is a minor case not requiring surgery, but know that it can be fixed and that the dog can still live a useful, full life even with LP or surgery to correct it. Keep us updated please. All the best to you. |

| Amos has just been diagnosed with a semi-bad knee. He has Laxity/Cranial drawer in right stifle. He is 14 months old and will need to stay on joint supplements to keep his joints in the best shape that they can be. He really doesn't bend his knees in the back. Keeps them straight, the vet says that's because that is the position he's most comfortable. Way on down the road, we may end up with surgery. He also has bilateral hip dysplasia. He doesn't seem to be in too much discomfort at this time and he enjoys going out for long walks so we just take it one day at a time. |

Luxating patellas are, unfortunately, rather common in small and toy breeds. (Dogs with this condition should NOT be bred - another reason I dont' like backyard breeders!) My Mitzy has them, grade 1, in both hind legs. They dont' cause any pain, just every so often she'll skip when transitioning from canter to trot. Like Paula's girl, I keep Mitzy's weight down, give her regular exercise and glucosamine. |
