We recently adopted a rattie from the Atlanta Humane society..he is WONDERFUL...except he won't stop pottying on the carpet..pillows on the floor...and the fake plats! Not only that but he is like a little scavenger..if you drop something he eats it..when we are outside he has to taste/eat everything!!! Is this normal?? Its  soo fustrating to have a great..loving...loyal dog but he sooo bad!!! He also eats my shoes? We need help! Any suggestions besides the dog whisper?

first off tauney has to scout all the new smells and she eats everything inside and out.if i catch her i always take it from her. jmop....have you tried putting potty pads down? is he neutered? do you have other animals in the house? i have learned you have to put everything up when you have a rattie and i give tauney plenty of toys, chews to chew on they have a long rubber maid tub full of chews and toys. try gettting a kong and putting something in it or a bulley stick or a nyla bone.

First i wanted to say welcome to the forum~

Since you just recently adopted your rattie from the shelter... you have to treat it like a puppy all over again till you can trust him loose.

My dog , Indy, still has accidents in the house.... (he was at the shelter for 2 months before I got him) but sometimes i use a diaper which is called a bellyband....    that seemed to help some.... but I haven't made that fully commitment yet, but will do this week.

another thing to think of.... since he likes to go potty on soft things.... You might want to get him check for urinary tract infection...   dogs do that, because it hurts, and try to go on soft items...

it could be several things....  just gotta pinpoint the problem and yu will be able to resolve this issue....

or you can keep him on a leash in the house with you.... so that would give him less freedom to roam around the house and you can keep a close eye on him...

hope this helps.

Welcome, Mardi had some great advice on the potty issues. There are also some good threads under the training forum you can check out. I think the first step is a thorough check up by the vet. As far as the scavaging and eating of everything, I would say that is fairly normal considering he was a shelter dog. You can't know what he had to do for food before and it may just be natural for him. I am sure once you put him on a good diet for awhile and he knows there is always a meal coming it will lessen some. Good luck

Welcome to the site! This is a great group of people with lots of good advice for rearing a rattie. I defer to the excellent threads over on the Training Forum. Potty training males can be a bit more challenging than females, but many have had success. You must assume he has no training at all and start from square one as though he's a young puppy just being brought into your home. As territorial marking may be at play, be sure to read that pinned topic atop the Training Forum, also.
