Hi,
I have been having some behavioral problems with my female rat terrier of 4 years. My husband and I have two rat terriers, a male (Rex) and female (Raven) we purchased the male in a pet shop and had the female flown in from a rat terrier breeding farm in North Carolina. We love out two little doggies. Our Male dog is extremely mellow and laid back - loves to play ball and sit in our laps and relax. However, the female dog, Raven has problems sitting still and consistently licks you if you try to pet her of give her loves. She cannot relax and is always on edge.
Basically, she is just not enjoyable anymore and I'm sure she is not really enjoying feeling the way that she does either. Here are some examples of things that she does:
1 - They sleep in a kennel at night and we make sure they get plenty of water and have been feed as well as letting them go out to go potty. She will start yelping (a very high pitched, like she is dying yelp) about 10 minutes after she has been let back in the house and put in the kennel (with out male dog) for bed. When we go down to see what the problem is, we let her out and make sure she had enough water or try to coax her into getting a drink again, let her out again, give her loves, try everything that we can to help her calm down for the night. She wants nothing from us, no water, no food, doesn't need to go to the bathroom again and will give kisses compulsively. This happens about 3 times a week, sometimes more than that.
2 - Second example - if we have them sleep upstairs in their little comfy dog bed - she will pace the bedroom whining.. Whining in a way that I don't really think she knows that she's doing it. So I will get out of bed, make her get into her bed again (making sure she has everything that she would need to be comfortable). As soon as I'm back in bed she will be whining again with nothing to my knowledge being wrong or out of the ordinary.
With that said, we have a few questions for you if you have the time to answer them:
1. Since she is so hard to manage - have you heard of any types of treatments that have been proven to help with these types of issues? Any types of medication that has been given to dogs to help them calm down (not for our sake but for her as well).
2. Have you heard of other rat terriers having these types of behavior problems?
3. She has not been spayed - do you think that this would help her to came down? Do you think that the issues could be caused by some type of hormone imbalance?
Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions!!!

Thanks for posting here! I'm sure you will get lots of info here. Since I have only had spayed gals I don't know if that will change much. Does she get regular brisk walks? I would say try getting her to walk for a long time to wear her out and release any anxiety she has. It sounds like seperation anxiety from what you are saying. Also, have you had her looked over by the vet to make sure there is nothing medically wrong with her? Some Rat Terriers are more active than others and like a job. So she may need extra attention than you other one to keep her mind and body active. |

Just my first thought is also that it could be an exercise issue. I am not sure. This is a great site and there is a ton of info on here. keep us posted!! |

| My male is laid back and my female is very hyper. Exercise was the answer for us. In fact I am looking into agility for the female to release some of her energy. |

| I agree, exercise should help with the anxiety. I would have her fixed, if you are not a breeder there really is no reason for her not to be spayed, that should also help her settle down. You could also try Rescue Remedy, it does help with calming a dog done, I have used it and it does work. She sounds like she has some separation anxiety also. Give the good old brisk walking a good try especially before she goes to bed and see if it helps |

Both of my ratties are spayed, but I have a dobie that isn't, and she can be high-strung at times, usually when she's coming into heat...a few weeks before she gets so jumpy and nervous. I agree, it might be that she needs more exercise than your male...give her an extra walk or play session before bed and see if that helps her calm down for the night. |

First, get her spayed. It will help if it's hormone related and also it's better for her health....it will reduce her chance of mammory cancer and prevent a deadly uterine infection called pyometria. I agree with the others...get her checked out thoroughly by a vet including having her teeth checked for any infected teeth. Then - exercise her! Some ratties need a lot more exercise than others. Just letting them play in the yard for a few minutes won't do it....they need long, quality walks. Don't just meander along letting them sniff everything - walk for a good mile or 2 to start with. If she truly has separation anxiety or some other emotional issue (and no, this is NOT common with ratties) then I would try the Rescue Remedy or something from the vet. I have a whippet with separation anxiety and claustraphobia but that breed is known for having issues like that. As always - JMO. Hope something helps. |

Just wanted to add - the "compulsive kissing" is a rattie trait! Mine do that, too. They really love their people. |

| I have to agree with the good long walk before bedtime. She will probably be all geeked and silly at the start of it. The added benefit is a good walk is great for the humans too. |

Hi Paula,
Thank you so much!! Yeah I was thinking that spaying her would help out ... but now that it's getting to be spring, I bet she will really enjoy going out more often. I live in Utah where the winter has been really LONG and really brutal. But in the past, going for walks didn't really help her anxiety... So I don't know, then next step is for me to take her to the vet and have her looked over. I also bought these pills that are supposed to make your dog feel content.. I'm going to try them out and see if they help her at all, poor little thing.
She is such a smart dog that maybe she needs a little more of a challenge.. I'm just not sure how to give her that challenge or what kind of challenges she might need - I'll have to keep trying new things to figure it out.
Thank you so much for your suggestions!

By agility what do you mean? Are you taking her to do some training of some sort or some events? Also, where are you looking or finding this type of stuff for your dogs?
Thanks again,

I'm not sure what Rescue Remedy is, but I will definitely look into, it sounds really interesting. We were planning on breeding them (that's why we ended up purchasing the female) but the female is sooooo dominant that she will NOT let the male mount her - if you have any suggestions for this, please let me know. WE would love to have little ratties running around and to get our own little papered breeding farm established as we do have the acreage.
Also, do you know of any animal groups or foundations that supply free spaying or neutering?
Thank you,
Loni |

Loni, You mentioned that the dogs are crated together. Did you mean in the same crate? I wonder if she would do better in her own crate rather than sharing? I agree with the exercise advice. Since she is so high strung, she needs an outlet to get it out and a brisk walk that is serious walking will help. If she loves to play anything like frisbee or ball fetch, then a real vigorus (sp) game of that should help to. I would exercise her alone with just you to see if that helps. I have a one year old male mini rat and we got two frisbees. I take both and throw one, and he goes after it. When he brings it back, I ask him to drop it. When he does the second frisbee goes flying and he is off after it. We get to going so fast that by the end of a good fetch session, we are both panting. I wish you luck with your challenges. |

| I live utah too. Im not sure if there are any places that do free spaying or neutering unless you qualify. You can check out the Salt Lake spay and neuter clinic or the humane society of utah they both offer low cost. There are other places out there if you are not near Salt Lake. The humane society costs about $50 for dogs under 50 lbs. |

Hi Tauney,
So I would usually walk her for about a half hour to 45 minutes in the afternoon and that would be after she had been in the yard running around wrestling with my male rattie.. haha she is crazy! Maybe taking her on walks at night would help her out before bed, then she could rest more all through the night and feel more relaxed in the morning.
There are definitely different things that I could try to help the situation... She is so human like - you can see it in her face when she does something that she knows that we don't like, but it's like she can't help herself.. Poor little thing
Thank you!!!

Hi Cheryl,
The female doesn't like anything related to balls or frisbees.. in fact she is not interested in really anything other than rolling in stuff and jumping up on us and giving us non stop kisses as well as the other annoying things that I mentioned.. But she does have some interest in wrestling and she and I have some pretty good wrestling matches once in a while.. maybe some more one on one time is just what she needs.. she does crave more attention than the male and she receives it, but maybe it's not enough for her.
And about the dogs being crated together.. I thought the same thing.. if I separated them at night then she would just get really upset and start barking like she was dying after about 3 minutes. I don't know how she would be if I let her out to sleep in their little bed and left the male in the crate. He's so laid back and calm that I don't think he would mind one bit. I'll have to try that since she's more social and much more like a human then the male.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Erica,
That's not bad at all actually. I was working with my vet and he was talking more along the lines of $90 or more depending on things that might happen. Thanks for the hint!!

Hi Mary Beth,
Do you have all rat terriers? Those are really cute names!! I'm going to be setting up an appointment to have her completely looked over and then to have her spayed since she won't let our male dog mate with her - Everyone on here has given us such good advice that I'm sure something will work. I must add that I love the kissing, in fact I"m a little addicted to is.. My male dog never kisses and if he does it seems like the most painful experience you could put him through.. hahah it's so funny how all dogs have such unique personalities.
Thank you,

haha, that's so funny - maybe it's something in the water in NC that makes them CRAZY HYPER... That's so cute that he likes to sleep in the garage... hmm I don't know if she would like the garage because she's such a princess, if I gave her the chance she would sleep in bed with me, but I don't like the hair and am a little allergic.. but I think that if she slept in her little dog bed without the male (rex) she might like that and I think I'm going to try that tonight actually.
I've nick named her thunder foot because she runs around the house at a gallop and makes so much noise that I couldn't resist... haha
That NC farm name does sound a little familiar, I asked my husband and he couldn't remember the name either.
Thanks and god bless the PROZAC_RATTIES out there!!! They keep us on our toes! hahah |

I have two crazy boys that need lots of excersize. I take them to the dog park almost every day and they love it! I just walk around and keep an eye on them while they run around and play! There are quite a few dog parks in Utah here is a weblink to a list of them. The one I go to is in Sandy. Its kind of small but the people who go there are great about being responsible for thier dogs. http://www.ecoanimal.com/dogfun/utah.html |
