Maggie takes the cheese squares I give her for a treat and carefully digs a small hole, then she takes her little nose and delicately covers the cheese with her nose.  I've never seen a dog do this.  The weird thing is, she never digs it up again as far as  I can tell.  Does anyone have a dog that does this or what can you offer as an explanation.

Mine occasionally bury/hide very special/new/tasty treats (so did several of my dachshunds) to enjoy later. But they usually go back and retrieve the items pretty quickly. It's instinct to save food for hard times. This behavior tends to be more prevalent in strays as they have known hunger a time or two. Zipper, my stray rescue, was real bad about it the first 6 months we had her, but doesn't do it anymore. She's over her psychological hunger now. She knows there are no more "hard times".

Interesting! Maggie was found on a Texas road, eating a pinecone and underweight, and we've been spoiling her ever since. These cheese treats are the only food she 'hides'. Your explanation makes sense, but I wonder why she still does it! In the Winter, she never does it here in Va. It may be because of the ground being hard sometimes.
