Hello. I am getting a puppy rat terrier in 10 days. I've already picked him out from the breeder. He's somewhere between a toy and a mini. The breeder says that he'll probably be about 12 lbs (max 14). We definitely want to crate train him, but I'm having the hardest time figuring out which size crate to get! I'm stuck between the 24x18x21 and the 30x21x24. I want it to be the right size when he's full grown, but I have no idea how big that will be in terms of length and height. I also don't want the crate to be too big. I'm looking at the Midwest Life Stages crates, and I'm leaning toward the smaller of the two sizes. Any suggestions?? Anyone out there have a rat terrier in that size range? This is my first rat terrier (actually, my first dog) and I can't wait to get him!! His name will be Murray.

Thanks!

Joanna,

CongRats! I use the black wire crates that are medium in size, I think 27 x 19 range. I have a toy rat terrier who is 8lbs. They come with a divider you can use while he is a puppy and the expand as needed. I got mine at PetSmart.

My Daisy is 16 lbs. and a medium crate works beautifully Used a divider when she was a pup to help with housetraining.

Thanks for the insight! I think I'm going to go with the medium (30") size. I'm sure I'll have more questions soon. This site seems like a great resource!

We like to think so - LOL!!! Can't wait to hear how it's going. Please browse around the training and health/diet sections. There are lots of answers there to the most common questions, but always feel free to just ask again - we love to help!!! There's also a "You Might be a Rat Terrier If..." thread that provides a lot of insights into their quirks and habits
