This is why animals should never be given as gifts....

In any case now you have him. So, a few questions.  How old is he? Is this a puppy?  Are you crate training him?  Puppies don't come having all their training - you have to teach him.  Crate training is the best way for housetraining and it does take a while.  Until he is housetrained I wouldn't leave him alone and unsupervised.

The digging - he's bored.  These dogs need a good amount of exercise and interaction...there is a saying "a tired terrier is a good terrier"!  Does he have toys?  Chew toys? Do you play a lot with him?

The skittishness is something you'll have to work on for a while but let's tackle the potty training first.  Also, where did your bf get him?  From a pet store or a breeder or what?

There are also lots of training tips in the training forum!

I got Chrissy for Christmas and she is still in training too. Are you using a crate? Be sure to read the crate training post, it has lots of good info.

Welcome to the site, hope to see photos of your baby soon.

I've not had near as much experience as most people who post, but just so you can hear it from someone else, I've crate trained all three of my ratties and they were all crated for close to a year.  Of course not all day, only when we were gone or if I couldn't watch them at all times.  It does get better but it isn't easy, especially the first few months.  Alice, my 8 mo. old puppy, still has accidents, but it's always my fault because I'm not watching for signals like I should.  The best thing is play with them and toys.  You have to make up your mind when you have any animal in your house that some things will get destroyed or scratched or chewed on.  The love they give you makes up for it all!!

my advice is this... and i now have 2 rattie puppies...

HAVE PATIENCE! HAVE TIME! BE WILLING TO SACRIFICE YOURSELF!

your puppy or adult dog will need you to do these things...
you will need to be PATIENT and CALM in every step you take and in every accident they make...
you will need to dedicate TIME in training your dog, playing with your dog (even just 2 - 30 min sessions a day works!)
you will need to SACRIFICE your wants/needs and put your new baby 1st!!! just like a child, they need attention, looked after and taken care of!

i hope your BF knew that this is a full time responsibilty and I HOPE HE IS HELPING YOU!

Good luck!

Welcome to the sight.  As all have said already, training takes time.  There are two good threads posted permanently atop the Training Forum on crate training and potty training.  You should read them and try those time-proven approaches.
