Welcome to the group. I can't add anything else to what everyone else has said. He follows your wife around like her shadow all the time... well my baby did the same thing with my daughter. Thus his name, Shadow. He loves it. Shadow did the whinning thing in his crate, but I put it in my room at night so he can see me and I talk to him and tell him he has to go in his "house" and it is night-night time. He does wonderful as long as he knows I am close. After a couple days, he knows that as long as he is in my room during the day he is "safe" and doesn't do that anymore. Just be patient and you will reap huge rewards.

Another Harley - We adopted our Harley about a year ago from the Humane Society. She was 10 months old and house trained and slept through the night (most nights... I think when rabbits get in the back yard she wakes up and wants to play....). Our Harley was shay for about a week (you would NEVER know it now). Ours was kennel trained too and went right in the kennel. In fact if we leave the door open just a little, she will sometimes go in and settle in on the blankets in there. As for kongs... the ball is wonderful. We found a small treat that just fits in the larger hole and we'll put a couple of treats in there and she'll go for 30 to 45 minutes getting them out. Great for keeping occupied for a little while. (When we first gave her the kong with the treat inside it took her a couple of hours to get it out. It seems that the 30-45 minutes is settling in as her time to get them out. The treat is available at Walmart. It is the Hollywood liver treats and comes in a small box like a whipping cream box for 96 cents or something like that. They are just the right size for slipping in the big hole of the kong and yet they can get it out (not like the kong treats that Harley just plain couldn't get out).

Good luck with your little ratty... they're wonderful dogs.

Nah Jan, the 'rest of the world' is just less fortunate for not having these dogs in their lives :p
I have a full weekend ahead (Daughter #2, age 17 has leading role in a 4 day musical performance) but I plan to check back often enough to see pictures of you, Sassy and Angel! I'm very excited for you!

Welcome.  I'm also new to this.  I just got a 8 month old Rat Terrier that I got from a animal rescue group as well.  I'm figureing out that she has some health issues but we will do what our little Izzy needs to be healthy.  Izzy is very attached to me and isn't so much to my 5 year old daughter. She is great with kids don't get me wrong but is very attached to her new mommy so to speak. She is doing really well and has slept through the night since the 3rd night home.  She will sleep with my daughter until she falls asleep and then comes to my room to sleep in her puppy bed. But she is having some potty issues.  She isn't much of a chewer but does love to play with her toys.  She even has one with has a noise maker in it and she loves to make it squeak.  She only will play with toys when we get her in the playing mood.  Otherwise she will not just play with them on her own.  I hear that they like to chase mice whcih i'm hoping my little Izzy will do because every winter we get them in the kitchen.  So this will be good when winter comes.
She has the run of the house while we are gone which I'm being told is pretty bad but she isn't too bad when left at home other then the potty issue.  I just close all the doors to the other rooms.  Although yesterday i forgot to close a door and she pulled all the laundry down stairs and was sleeping on it while i was gone.
GOOD LUCK!

Do not worry JenMax my dog did not play much either and wanted to cuddle all the time. She was the kindest sweetest dog. She just passed away. Now I have three female ratties that an older woman could not care for and all they do is play and tear around the house and pee.........
