| Ok I am scared to death I am going to do something wrong with my new baby girl!
She is three months old and out of the blue she starts shaking. She isn't in anything scary and it isn't cold in here at all. She is very tiny.. she doesn't even weigh 2 pounds and probably isn't going to get much bigger from what I have read. But she just shakes!!
I am worried i am doing something wrong or should be doing something and I am not.
She also chews on her paws.. is there a reason for this??
Thank you for any help or advise

| Is she a toy Rattie? Maybe get her a little sweater. You may not be cold but she might be. Is is all the time, or just sometimes. Is it like a seizure type of shaking? Can you post a picture of her, so we can get an idea of how big she is? I would definately consult a vet about it. |

She is REALLY REALLY tiny and I don't think it is a seizure it isn't like that it is more like shivers. |

| Awe, she is cute. It is probably just a baby thing. She will probably outgrow it. Did she recently get any shots at the vet's? Mine always shivered for a while after that, when they were little. |

| She might just be a little cold. Lucy is 18 pounds and still shakes as soon as she gets the slightest bit cold. She is adorable and tiny. It might be that she might require a sweater for days when it is chillier and a fleece blanket to snuggle up in at night. If you are worried it never hurts to ask your vet. |

I've never heard of a "tot toy" .. ??? I agree.. get her a sweater. If you can't find one small enough... use a sock and cut holes for the legs. Just having something against her skin will provide her with warmth and make her feel more secure. You might also consider putting a heated pad in her crate. |

| well... being new to puppy momdom is as scary as being a new people mommy!!! Ok I THOUGHT that holding her against me would be enough warmth. Apparently not. I wrapped her in her blankie and she drifted off into a peaceful sleep and quit shaking.. she was cold.
Thanks guys I appreciate the help.
I posted last week that I would be coming on here but apparently something happened with my user ID and I had to create a new one. |

| When i was researching I found them to be called Tot Toys if they were under 5 pounds and Toys if under 10 pounds. I am not found of the term Tot Toy.. it just sounds weird to me. The chances of her being over 5 pounds are slim to none at this point. I have to say that she is the sweetest little dog i have ever met in my life. She is such a joy to have around!! |

Your little tiny girl is just adorable! Our Holly is 9 1/2 lbs. and she shakes all the time. She is always cold if it's under 70 degrees... but doesn't really like to wear sweaters/coats either... so she just shakes. |

| I agree, it must be a Rattie-thing. Lucy will shiver once in a while like she's cold, but as soon as she gets all snuggly inside the blankets, she's just fine. |

Thanks Tracey. I've been looking into puppies for the past year, and my fiancee really wanted a terrier in general. He loves JRTs but they're a little bit less adapatable than Ratties, and that is what we really needed. I saw an add for the puppies in the Houston newspaper and couldn't resist! I am working on pics should be up tonight. We named him Nibbler. He's too CUTE! |

Cute new puppies!!! My Dilly did a lot of shivering as a puppy, her breeder warned us that she would, especially when she was sleepy! I don't know why, but it does seem to be a common ratty trait. As she got older she did it less and less. Now she is 2 & 1/2 and only occassionally does this. I do think that they get colder than the avg. dog since they have so little fur and virtually bare bellies! |

If they are shaking and acting really tired too, there blood sugar could be low. Give her some vanilla ice cream or some Karo syrup. With the tiny dogs there blood sugar can drop really quick because they cant eat a whole lot at one meal, and they still have a fast metabolism. Make sure she eats 4 times a day until she gets a little older too. If you dont think it is blood sugar related she could just be nervous or cold. |

I think part of the reason they are colder besides that they are smaller than us is that there is a big temp difference between where we are and the floor where they are. I notice this in my house when I have to change my Betta's water. Water kept higher will be room temp, but the water jugs that I store on the floor are actually chilly, too chilly to put Deebo in (my fish) without warming it up first!

| my pumpkin is a toy...she's about five or six pounds right now. She shakes sometimes, she also pees when nervous. These little ones are so tiny, in our big world. I think she's just nervous a lot. She'll shake when cold and when nervous. Its common among all small dogs, we have a toy fox terrier that has always done it too. When your pup gets a little bit bigger, and older, she may not do it as much. She's so cute, her little face reminds me of pumpkin. |

Hi I am new to this forum but am so excited to see other people who love their ratties like i do....I would take your puppy to the vet just to be sure...sometimes they do shake cuz they are little or cold that is what i thought about mine but he actually has something called intention tremors. This is when they "intend" to do something and they just shake because a part of their brain misfires...it could be because they are even thinking of doing something but the shaking usually stops when they are resting or sleeping...my dog does it the worst when it is eating time and when he is excited about something. a major sign that they have this is the have stiff limbs...like my dog doesn't bend his front legs when he walks...This is not very common though so i would try wrapping it up and keeping it warm but if i continues i figure it never hurts to ask your vet! |

| He is two and the cutest thing ever....i am trying to get a picture to show up but am new at this kind of stuff and can't figure it out yet....i will keep trying. Anyway he is a sweetie and comes from Tyler TX...but i live in northern CO. He does have a few health problems (the intention tremmors and allergies) so i have been trough a lot with him...but he is worth it!!! Despite all his problems I love him more than anything and he is the best snuggler ever. The breeder i got him from is the best....and because he is so "special" they are giving us another one for free (not from his parents...they don't breed his parents anymore cuz of his issues...even though he is the only one that has ever had these problems)-of our choice so we are waiting on the mom i picked out to go in heat. That is about it in a nutshell....but if anyone has questions on the shaking or allergies...i have learned quite a bit! |
