Her name is Chloe she is 8 months old and is suspose to be full rat terrier what do you guys think? I think she is on the skinny side you can see her ribs and hips but I can fatten her up. I got her at the local shelter and tomorrow we have an appointment tomorrow with my vet at 2:00 to have her checked out. She loves to be in your lap she is asleep right now in mine while I am typeing this.

You capture her beautifully in the last 2 pictures. What an intelligent expression. What a muscular body. IMO she is not over weight. She is fit. I can see Manchester Terrier in her head. Of course the Manchester was used to develop the Rattie. I think that it is very cool that we have so many "Types" in our breed.

What a gorgeous girl! Shelter dogs tend to be a little under weight...low quality food and stress. But we have seen it here recently that these dogs can fill out. Paul's little guy is a great example of this. He was so skinny, you could count his ribs and back bones, but you wouldn't know it now. Paul did an amazing job with that little rattie.

Shes like that right now I can count her ribs and see her hip bones but its ok give me a week or two or three and she will fill out with lots of love and good food. They feed Science Diet at the shelter here but I do not care to much for Science Diet and I don't think they feed enough. It was hard to catch a picture of her because she kept trying to get in my lap.

How much do you guys think I should feed her? Today I gave her a cup dry and one of the small cans mixed together and she ate it all. Does that sound like the right amount or is it to much.

How much does she weigh...I would go by the guidelines on the bag and maybe add a little extra for now until she's up to her ideal weight and then cut back to maintain. Ask your vet when you see him about what he thinks her ideal weight should be. Some of these dogs are meant to be and will always have a "skinnier" look to them.

Oh Chloe is adorable. Don't worry to much about seeing the ribs at this point. Focus on getting some good dog food and feed her as directed on the bag. She will eat less of the "good" dog food so be prepared for that. When Busta first came to my home I could see his ribs too but after just a few weeks he was looking very healthy. I was feeding him Innova EVO both dry and canned dog food mixed together. Now I give him and Molly both just dry in the moring and dry and a little canned in the evening. Eventually I will be just feeding dry to maintain the current weight but we had some food issues for a while.

Congrats and good luck with your new baby, she is so cute and I love her name!!

IMO, she looks great. Our dog Bingeaux has always been on the skinny side, especially compared to my in-law's ratties who are overweight. It seems like the more we feed him the more active he is and he just burns it all off. He's no bigger now than he was when we got him. It's interesting somebody said something about all the different breeds that make up ratties, because at times our guy looks like a whippet because of his body shape.

I have always fed the best quality food that I can afford dry and free choice to my dogs. I have 8 dogs ranging in weight from my 11 lb. Rattie to my 85 lb. Lab mix. None of them is over weight and all but 2 are spayed/neutered. IME if the food is there they will eat what they require and no more.

Thanks everyone. We went to the vet today and she got a clean bill of health except for the heartworm test it will be back next week. The vet did say she could use to gain a few pounds. She weighs 11 pounds.
