Hi,

I just came across this site today and was excited to see all this information on rat terriers. We just lost our beloved "sassy" who was a Jack Rat Terrier after 7 years. It has left the family devastated. Although no dog can take the place of Sassy, we are looking into getting a new rat terrier puppy. We have found one on puppyfinder.com that my daughter has fell in love with as well as the rest of the family. The breeder is currently out of town so we are waiting to here back from her. We are all excited about getting ready to receive a new puppy into the family. Can you recommend a good puppy food?

Thanks

Hi, and welcome. I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your Sassy

Congratulations on deciding to get a rat terrier - we, of course, think they are the best breed ever, but we are extremely biased Just a note of caution: Be careful that the breeder you are thinking of getting your puppy from is not a puppy mill or backyard breeder!

As to the puppy food, there are quite a number of excellent choices. Some that members here recommend is Evo, Canida, Wellness, Merrick and others. None of the foods available at places like Wal-mart are good. You want to stear clear of ingredients like corn, gluten, wheat, etc....especially in the top of the ingredient list. Many ratties do appear to have "allergy" issues with corn.

Welcome! How exciting, hope to see pics of her soon. You can add Natural Balance to the foods listed above. And Canaidae has an all stages formula that works for puppies and adults. Good for you to be thinking of healthy foods for your new baby!

Welcome! So sorry for your loss. We live in Texas with two females. Button is 4 (left in the avatar pic) and Zipper, a rescue, is 1½ now. We adore these little dogs. We raised miniature dachshunds for years but finally found the breed that was meant for us! good luck with your rattie search.

Thanks everyone! I look forward to being part of this forum. We are anxiously awaiting the breeder to come home from vacation on the 28th and the puppy would be ready for us to bring home around Feb.4. She is adorable. Apricot and white. We have our fingers crossed.
Thanks!

Welcome, I am also new here. Sorry to hear about your loss, my mother-in-law just lost one of hers. I wish I could help with the puppy food, but my wife does all of the shopping, so I don't know.

Sorry for your loss.  My puppy is a very fussy eater.  Nutro and Royal Canine products have passed his seal of approval.

Hello and welcome to the site. I am so sorry about your loss. We lost our H-Chie (poodle/pomeranian) last year. She was with us for over 13 years. We got Fuji after we lost her and have been thrilled with him. Although no dog will ever replace H-Chie, Fuji has been a great additiona to our family and we are just in love with him. Good luck in finding your new puppy.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your Jack-Rat. You are right, you will never replace Sassy, but getting a new pup is great medicine and you will love her/him for its personality! I feed Katie (my Rattie) and Dixie (my Lab) Natural Balance. Katie eats the allergy formula and Dixie the reduced calorie formula. Can't wait to meet your new pup and see pictures.
