I have had my rat-terrier now for 5 yrs and I was wondering if I was to get her spade would that help her to calm down. She is so hyper when we is in the house or around people I was just wondering.

My mother in law had her full blooded Yorkie, spayed, thinking it would calm her down, but it didn't. She was the most hyper little dog anyway.

I had Mic neutered when he was about 2 1/2... the vet said that most likely it wouldn't change his behavior because his personality was already so developed by that age. But because he was so territorial we had it done. Honestly, I never noticed a difference in his hyperness after the surgery...

Have you been breeding her... is that the reason she's five years old and not spayed yet? Spaying doesn't necessarily affect a dog's basic nature... |

Ratties are very active dogs and stay that way much of their lives. Spaying in general does not alter their personalities. However, if you walk her and provide her with the proper amount of exercise, you should see an 'improvement' in her in-house behavior. Start with a good long walk in the morning if at all possible and make sure it's a "proper" walk at a good pace with her in the heel position (1/2 to 45 minutes should do it). Add another walk in the late afternoon/early evening if you can.

I agree - she needs lots of quality exercise!
On another note, if you are not a breeder it is best to get her spayed. It may not change her personality (didn't change any of mine) but it will prevent potential health problems. Unspayed females are more at risk for breast cancer and the very dangerous uterine infection called pyometra. One of the members on here just went through that with her 10 month old....if she hadn't taken her in for spaying when she did her rattie most likely would have died.
