Help, My first time to the site.  I've got a 6mo old rat/chi hybrid ,"Candi", and am having some problem with potty training.  She will use a pad when confined to a specific area of the house but when loose prefers other places.  She will go outside with my older housetrained chi and potty but will often poop in the house minutes after coming back in.  She has not developed a "message" to let me know when she has to go out but seems to know what the word potty means. Am thinking of crate training at this time.  Is this a good idea or does anybody have any other suggestions.

Welcome to you and Candi. I HIGHLY recommend crate training - can't stress enough how much easier it makes housetraining - IF done correctly as well as helping your rattie (or any dog) stay safe when you cannot watch them closely as well as protecting your home when you need to be away. Dogs often come to see their crate as their safe haven and special place. It's also very helpful when overnight vet care is needed or for travel purposes (in a hotel, or at another's home).

There is pinned near the top in the training forum, an excellent thread on how to crate train correctly If you have any additional questions, please let us know. Do stick around and tell us all about your new ratchi and your other pup as well!!!AND we LOVE pics!!

Crate training is the way to go. Also, when you take her out stay with her and make sure she does all her business (pees AND poops).
